After I power it up, it sometimes doesn't even make it to the logon
screen before abruptly shutting off. Other times it'll stay on for a
few minutes after loggin on.

Is this related to this issue:

The issue doesn't list this symptom, only "no power"

Thanks!

That's true, so ironically you sort of have to hope that after a while
it won't start up at all (so that you'll fall within the list of
symptoms). It does sound like you're well on your way to that, though.
In any case you should get in touch with Apple now. m.

not quite -
I just took an iMac G5 in for repair - SATA controller problem -
the repair group tells me:
"... they have been authorized by apple to examine both the logic board
and power supply for 'bulging capacitors*', and if found replace the
part(s)..."

* - this is the cause of the power supply and logic board failures,
apparently some manufacturer screwed up a LARGE batch of capacitors,
Apple, Dell, and others are experiencing failure of the capacitors. The
capacitors fail by extruding some material which eventually falls to the
underlying circuit board shorting out what ever is there.
