After repair of the 7.1.1 runtime engine, splash screen said
unregistered. Edited the registry to put in serial number. Now the
serial number is on the splash screen and it says unregistered too.
What gives? Does this matter? Is this whole installation going to stop
working?

I don't remember any registration in the 7.1.1 runtime engine. Are you sure you did not install e.g. an evaluation or regular version of LabVIEW?

I had a fully registered 7.1 installation. I repaired the 7.1.1 runtime
engine because of another problem. No registration asked for. The
installation apparently became unregistered because this is what it
said on the startup screen. I looked up this problem and the
knowledgebase said edit the registry key or reinstall. I edited the
registry key and now I have (see attached).

Also the links under programs don't work although Labview starts when clicking a vi.

Maybe it's just so screwed up there's no choice but reinstall. This all started when I ill-advisedly ran an installer.
