I have Windows 7 and on 4/17/10 I just started getting error code 646 when
trying to install updates KB980729 (MS Office OneNote 2007) and KB981715
(2007 Microsoft Office System). I also have problelms fixng Adobe since I
get the message that he latest update is not compatible with 64 Bit. Tried
uninstalling and reinstalling earlier version but can't quite get it done.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First - why is it *new* - or do you mean to you only?
Try manually installing the updates in question (download, save, execute
locally.)

Second - Adobe *what*? They do make many products - some free, some not
free. Also - what does their support mechanisms do to assist you?

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Do not mean to appear so ignorant but I do not fully know the tech side of
computers. Though I try to do the best I can by reading. I have rarely had
to ask for assistance like this and I have never had this specific situation
before. I am relatively new to trying to solve computer tech poblems as I
work in medical field and mostly use work related systems handled by our IT
department. If you've never had something like this happen before, then
even knowing how/where to ask for help can be a challenge in it's self. A
number of savy computer users have expressed how impatient they are with
someone so "unknowledgeable" as I am. This has kept me from asking for help
because of the "scolding" I got for simply not knowing all they thought I
should have kinown. So maybe asking for help the "proper" way is all new
territory. Can't help having to learn some things only as a new situation
arises.

Yes "new" to me. Yes I followed instructions and tried installing manually
but it will not work and I get the same error code. Never received any error
messages before on this new I (received as gift 12/2509) lap top or any
others. Considered myself lucky from all that I have read over the yrs.

Adobe reader 9that came with computer (updated to 9.1.2 when offered it
shortly after getting computer), sorry again. After saying "yes" to the
offered update, some things (various programs incuding trying to
download/install seem to not be working properly as I oten get "unable to
open/install/download messages. They say to uninstall and reinstall older
version but I keep getting "kicked" into the new updated version when I try
installling older one. Their support just keeps saying the same thing over
and over, uninstall and re-install older version

The problem is that you assume it is 'scolding' and/or it has to do with a
lack of technical knowledge. It is not (from me anyway) and it does not
(from me anyway).

It's not a matter of what you ask, but how you ask it.

You started out (in the body of the message) much better than most. You
gave your operating system, a date when the problem first started, an error
code and specific update descriptions. That was fantastic. Really.

The error 646 is easy to search for using your favorite Internet search
engine. Now - you could possibly not know about these things, so here is
the one I suggest and "how" to use it to get the best results:

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

The simplest answer is the one I gave: download the individual updates and
install them manually. At least it seems to work for many people. Won't
know until you try.

However, fair enough, I cannot be sure that you know how to get the updates
manually or how to search for them (see above for the latter, about to give
the former to you now..)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980729
and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981715

(Notice - the KB ###### was important and if put in the web page pattern
above, it will give you more information about a given update...)

You can download and save the executable files from those web pages, then
after closing everything else (possibly even reboot and do this first thing
after loggin in) - run them and try to install.

If that fails (you've indicated you have done that - but I have given the
details above in case you did it differently) you may need to run
Diagnostics on your Office 2007 product. Using my Google search example:

http://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+run+diagnostics+in+Office+2007
---> http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA012340761033.aspx#2

As for Adobe - uninstall it (Control Panel --> Programs and Features -->
Find it and remove it...) reboot and then download the latest version:
http://get.adobe.com/reader/ -->
http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.3/enu/AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe
(Uncheck the "Free Google Toolbar" box, please; if you don't just choose the
second link from above.) and SAVE it to your computer, do not just RUN it.

Not surprisingly (go Adobe) - that is still not the 'latest and greatest'
but beyond the version you said you last updated to.

Run to install it.

Then open it and try to update further from the menus within the new adobe
reader.

You should not need to use 9.1.x... 9.3.x should work fine.

Then - just to be sure you are not infested with something...

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan with the following
(freeware version):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

Reboot and logon as administrative user.

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan with the following
(freeware version):

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

Reboot and logon as administrative user.

Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Notice - my signature block (everything below my name) has not changed. It
was not directed toward you in particular.
