Q : Is there any construction difference between these two capsules
other than the slots behind the transducer in the cardiod version ?

Yes.
It is in fact the rear venting that makes the cardioid a cardioid. But
when you add the rear venting, you have to change other things too (like
the tensioning and the spacing between the backplate and the diaphragm).

Curses!, there goes my plan for overcoming my omni excess, cardiod
deficit with a saw.
M
(have always been amused by people who gaffertape the heads back on
their 57s after
a drumstick hit then wonder why they sound different).

Take a 57, cover the side vents with gaffer's tape. It becomes an omni,
but it becomes an omni with a really weird frequency response. Sometimes
actually useful as an effect on electric guitar, but more useful as an
excercise in what the venting does.
