It is in fact the rear venting that makes the cardioid a cardioid. But when you add the rear venting, you have to change other things too (like the tensioning and the spacing between the backplate and the diaphragm). --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. M (have always been amused by people who gaffertape the heads back on their 57s after a drumstick hit then wonder why they sound different).

Take a 57, cover the side vents with gaffer's tape. It becomes an omni, but it becomes an omni with a really weird frequency response.
