If you elect to go anyway, be sure you have a _full_ image backup or oem restore disks... you will need them when you come back. Beverly Howard [MS MVP-Mobile Devices]
From: Sven on 19 Feb 2008 22:32 I would disagree with Bev on this. If your tablet OEM provides drivers for Vista on their web site, and the laptop is already running Vista, it should be no issue to load a clean version of Vista (different flavor) and then add the drivers. If you were to just upgrade, it would be even simpler, as the hardware specific drivers would just remain in place. I understand you already have the new full version of Vista to which you wish to upgrade. If you had XP and wanted to go to Vista, I would not be as sure. But since you are already running Vista, and the tablet drivers exist, and are proven, and can be accessed, there is no reason they shouldn't work on a different version of Vista. You will in fact find that most of the tablet functions swill work right after install. The touch screen will likely function normally. The drivers will likely be needed for things like assigning the tablet specific buttons, and controlling what happens when you go into tablet mode, i.e. default to portrait in tablet, and landscape in laptop, for example. Do however follow Bev's advice and make those restore CDs/DVDs that most current systems provide the ability to do. They are priceless. -- Sven MVP Mobile Devices "Beverly Howard [Ms-MVP/MobileDev]" <BevNoSpamBevHoward.com> wrote in message news:uWJBskzcIHA.1376(a)TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > >> should be no problem right? << > > Tablet's not the same animal as a notebook... the windows os is > different... so, short answer, no. > > If you elect to go anyway, be sure you have a _full_ image backup or oem > restore disks... you will need them when you come back. > > Beverly Howard [MS MVP-Mobile Devices] > >
From: Chris H on 20 Feb 2008 00:36 The Windows operating system, in this case Vista, is not really any different than what already is there. What is different is that in certain versions of Vista (like Ultimate) there are Tablet functionalities already built in. Unlike Windows XP Pro, Tablet functionalities are already included. In XP Pro, on a Tablet PC, you would have had the Tablet PC Edition "superset" which ran on top of XP Pro. If the machine already contains (check with the OEM) the proper hardware for Tablet functionalities, such as the pen digitizer, then there should be no problems. -- Chris H. From: Chris H on 20 Feb 2008 10:02 It really should be fairly easy and straight-forward. It just takes a pretty long time, so be patient and don't force it. -- Chris H.
