From: TMA on 22 Feb 2005 11:29 Whenever I click Local Area Connection at my Network Connections window I receive this "Acquiring Network Address" status for a while and then it always becomes "limited or no conectivity". The thing is that most of the times, I get stuck to this "Connecting Miniport WAN" window when I try to click on my other icon to connect me to the internet. Aparently, it's a problem with this DHCP server which is not compatible with this new SP2 I have installed here. But I'm not really sure about it. I read an article about it which says that this DHCP is enabled by default through the TCP/IP protocol and there's no way for you to disable it. I'm not so good with all this network configurations, but I have an internet connection here through a pppoe protocol using an Efficient Network ADSL modem model SpeedStream 5200. I can't even get to the modem's configurations like I did before when I typed http://speedstream on my IE. Could anyone drop me a line about it?

Can you post links to the articles that you've read? You can disable the DHCP client on any computer that you wish, and assign a fixed ip address. But a fixed ip address, if used on a computer with other problems, won't necessarily correct the problems and provide connectivity. The "... limited or no conectivity" error can be caused by a number of problems. Provide ipconfig information for each computer, and we'll see if we can diagnose the problems, not the symptoms. Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window - Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!, Open c:\ipconfig.txt, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing. And describe what each computer connects to, and how. -- Cheers, Chuck Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing. My email is AT DOT actual address pchuck sonic net.

I have One AP Router SMC barricade 2804WBR running in 802.11 b+g mode / Channel 13 / with WEP encription in 64bits I'm using the latest TREND drivers downloaded from Trendware site. I'm using the WiFi Windows Zero configuration on all systems under Win XP SP2. PC desktop 1: Win XP Home +SP2 (in an other room than AP/Router - very good WiFi signal) ====================================================================== Wifi PCI card TREND TEW-423PI with the latest TREND drivers WEP 64bitsbits PC desktop 2 : Win XP pro SP1+SP2 (Few meters far from AP/Router, same room) ============================================================= Wifi PCMCIA/CARDBUS card TREND TEW-421CB (802.11 g+b) with the latest TREND drivers, in PCI/PCMCIA adapter. WEP 64bits Wifi PCMCIA/CARDBUS card ELSA MC-11 (802.11b) in PCI/PCMCIA adapter. WEP 64bits Ethernet SMC EZ 10/100 Mbits card PC Laptop 3: Win XP Pro SP1+SP2 (Few meters far from AP/Router, same room) ============================================================= Wifi PCMCIA/CARDBUS card TREND TEW-421CB (802.11 g+b) with the latest TREND drivers, in PCMCIA slot. WEP 64bits Wifi PCMCIA/CARDBUS card ELSA MC-11 (802.11b), in PCMCIA slot . WEP 64bits Problems: ======== PC Desktop 1 with TEW-423PI works and connects pretty well with good WiFi signal. PC Desktop 2 and PC Laptop 3 with TEW-421CB doesn't connect to the AP/Routeur , the radio connection is OK but it doen't conclude the connection. I'm getting "Acquiring Network Address" status for a while and then it always becomes "limited or no conectivity". Net Stumbler is getting a good signal on each machine, but no connection... If I use the ELSA WiFi cards (also present on each system) instead of TREND cards, the 2 PC's connect very well to the AP/Router and everything is fine. Withe same parameters, the ELSA WiFi card allows connecting while the TREND card doesn't !!! On the TREND Wifi adapters I checked everything seral times: Channel, SSID, WEP keys, ... I've been working on that for days now and I can't find why it's not working properly... I'm now suspecting some incompatibility between the TREND drivers for TEW421-CB with Win XP SP2 (I've dowloaded the lattest drvivers version)... It seems SP2 has a very different way of doing than with XP origin or SP1 ..... So... can somebody help me to solve this problem ... Posting additional requests for help, in a thread started by someone else, won't help you, or the Original Poster. Or the helpers who try to do what they can. Please be patient - problems as complex as yours probably can't be answered in a couple of days. -- Cheers, Chuck Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing. PPP adapter Velox (the one which connects me to the internet) sometimes gets stuck on "Connecting Miniport WAN on PPPoE" and sometimes it goes on and succeed. If I ever get to see this miniport wan thing, either I have to wait a looooong time to try again or I have to reboot my PC in order to get it connected. #2) My modem's manual (SpeedStream 5200) says i can type http://speedstream to access it's web-like configurations. The thing is that I always get "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" no matter if I'm connected or not. Additional info: I use this connection to get to the internet. My network card has a network cable that goes to this SpeedStream 5200 modem (which I cannot access anymore by typing http://speedstream). From this modem, there's a phone cable to the phone socket on the wall. All I know about it is that it's a broadband connection 256 kpbs ADSL. When I want to come online, I have to be sure this "Local Area Connection 2" thingy is enabled, then I hit the icon to connect me to this "PPP Adapter Velox" and then I have to go to a website to log on. Hint: I recently downloaded SP2 and burned a new CD attaching it to a previous WinXP SP1 I had following the procedures I found on the web. I formated the HD and installed SP2 on an empty partition and had no problems. This "connecting to miniport WAN pppoe" message started to happen after I hook up this realtek PCI card and disabled the built-in card on my mother board. My Local Area Connection disappeared and this Local Area Connection 2 came on and now I have hard times to get connected. I know I'm not good with all these network names, but any help would be welcome. Thanks for your attention.
