From: Terry Pinnell on 1 May 2008 03:59 On my new PC, all the entries under Add/Remove Programs in AS 4.5 are checked but greyed. Why has that happened and what is its significance please? I see from Help that one immediate practical consequence is that if I wanted to remove one of these I would have to do so from both the PPC and the PC, which is a PITA. -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK

I may be wrong, but I think that indicates that the programs are installed on the PPC, but not on the PC. (I.e., if you started synching the PPC with a new PC that wasn't the one the programs were originally installed from.) Clearing a checkbox should remove the program from the PPC, but not the PC, since the program isn't on the PC to be uninstalled.

Yes, of course, that makes perfect sense! I haven't got around to re-installing those 30-40 progs on my new PC. Still ploughing through installing the 150 or so *PC* programs! -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK

Frankly, I don't bother reinstalling my PPC programs when I change/upgrade PCs, unless there's a PC-based component to the program (like the file converter in Adobe Reader.) I generally just copy the .cab file installed on the (old) PC to a folder on the new (called something clever like "Important PPC CABs") so I can copy the .cabs to the PPC via a card reader when/if needed, and bypass the Activesync/WMDC "add programs" function. (The most important cabs I permanently keep on my PPC's storage card marked as read-only for quick reinstallation in case of a total disaster while away from my PC.)
