Here is my list (and evaluation) of AntiVirus programs:

NOTE: I do NOT recommend ANY version of Internet Security suites,
example Norton 360, especially for home users. Stick with just
AntiVirus versions.

The order below is by when I used the software. ALL were very good at
catching/stopping malware. With #1 thru #3 I also use "SpyBot Search
& Destroy."

1) Norton AntiVirus (by Symantec) (my rating 3/4)

- I used for years
- Slow, resource hog
- Dumped Norton (in 2009) when they added a feature that deleted
software WITHOUT asking confirmation

2) McAfee AntiVirus (my rating 4/4)

- Used for 1yr
- Slow, resource hog
- Dumped when they added a feature (without warning) that cause
my system to become unusable; [Start] menu very slow to open,
one folder with data files could not be accessed at all
but had no problem before, etc. Removal of McAfee fixed
everything

3) BitDefender AntiVirus 2009 (my rating 2/4)

- Used for 8mths
- Fast, NOT a resource hog
- 2010 version caused BSoD on reboots/shutdowns
(hardware incompatibility)
- Full uninstall of 2010 REQUIRED download of their Cleanup Tool

4) ESET NOD32 AntiVirus (my rating 1/4)
http://www.eset.com/

- Using at present
- Extremely fast and uses low resources
- Includes Anti-Spyware AND Anti-Rootkit
- Warns me of MS Updates BEFORE MS does!
- You can submit, for evaluation, HTML files that are
suspicious (a dialog opens asking you if you want to)

Linux is an OS *not* an AV.

I do not understand you rating system. Eset NOD32 is the best of what was listed but I
don't get "(my rating 1/4)".

No OS requires an AV program. AV is simply insurance. I have run numerous Windows OS systems without
AV and no infections.
