From: Nuno Magalhães on 30 Jun 2008 15:50 Greetings I have an old Compaq Armada 1500 that i intend to use as P2P and printer server; maybe http/sql/ftp if i use really lightweight stuff since it only has 32RAM. The thing is, the disk is a 4GB Toshiba and i wanna get something larger than my 70GB of files. Can i get any IDE disk and make a small /boot partition at the beggining og the drive? Or do i need to fiddle with BIOS limits and LBAs and a whole bunch of stuff i'm unaware of? From my feeble attemps at searching stuff i found this limit to be 32GB and that i could ahve to disable dma in order for ide to work... Any suggestions? What about server software? TIA -- Nuno Magalhães

With that little RAM and disk space, I suggest that you stick with the console. > Can i get any IDE disk and make a small /boot partition at the > beggining og the drive? If so, you could add external drives to get to the capacity you need. > Any suggestions? What about server software? If it's so vital, i might wanna serve dynamic webpages, so php+sql, or maybe sqlite. This is secondary though, the main purpose is ftp and print server and maybe firewall in the future. > With that little RAM and disk space, I suggest that you stick with > the console. I don't intend to install X and the whole purpose of this threat is knowing if it's feasable to install *A LARGER DISK*. RAM is harder to solve, i don't know if i can find something usable nowadays. > Does it have any USB 2.0 ports on it? If so, you could add external > drives to get to the capacity you need. Only USB 1.0 > Static or dynamic pages? See above. -- Nuno Magalhães
