Well, the new 8-channel Sound Devices probably has pretty darn good
preamps, as does the Zaxon Deva, and I imagine the Edirol R44 is OK, but
all of them are above $1,000.

This is a pretty small budget for multitrack recording and there will be
some compromises. Better recommendations can be made if the project is
more precisely defined as to how the recordings will be made, and how
they'll be mixed.
