It can be configured to boot up in text mode. You can then throw away your legacy disc, and enjoy the full command set on your server. I don't know what the best (that's very subjective), but Debian has no problems installing text only, and you get - well, everything.. Gordon

I think all distros can be used without installing or running X; some have a 'server' option in the installation routine which will make that the default set-up. "Core" claims to be a minimal installation to which additional 'stuff' can be added as required to create a thoroughly customised set-up, and to be suitable for old PCs (i386). Slackware's good for light installs. But even the latest Fedora should work for you - depending on what your exact specs are.
