The drive in question was originally a web server drive and now I want to convert it over to a GUI desktop, not a web server. Should I just re-install? doug

Evolution is dependent on Gnome which is dependent on Xorg. Assuming that yum resolves all of the dependencies you should have a Gnome environment on your system. If that doesn't do it then you might as well do a fresh install of CentOS5.1.

Then yum groupinstall <group name> will install it. Good candidates for you are x windows and gnome groups
