From: Nils on 13 May 2008 07:01 Hello, I have a company project template which I need to amend, Iv managed to change the Project Start date but need to also reset the duration of the project ie the elapsed duration field. Every time I try using the task info box the fields are greyed out ?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Nils P.S. Im new to using project so please excuse my question if its an easy issue to resolve.
From: Mike Glen on 13 May 2008 11:04 Hi Nils, Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :) The Duration of any project is calculated by the program based on its network structure. You might like to have a look at my series on Microsoft Project in the TechTrax ezine, particularly #1 introduction - which also tells you about network analysis on which Project is based - at this site: http://tinyurl.com/2xbhc or this: http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMFrame.asp?CMD=ArticleSearch&AUTH=23 (Perhaps you'd care to rate the article before leaving the site, :) Thanks.) FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at this web address: <http://www.mvps.org/project/> Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :) Mike Glen MS Project MVP Nils wrote: > Hello, > > I have a company project template which I need to amend, Iv managed to > change the Project Start date but need to also reset the duration of > the project ie the elapsed duration field. From: Trevor Rabey on 13 May 2008 10:57 You cannot take an existing project and just type in a new overall duration in the project summary task, because durations roll up from the tasks rather than down from the summaries. Provided you have no tasks with date constraints, changing the start date will move the entire project to the new position in time. But most project plans have some tasks with date constraints so you take them off first, or use the adjust dates macro in the Analysis toolbar. From: Nils on 13 May 2008 11:23 Hi, Thanks for your response, Iv tried to adjust the date using the analysis toolbar but that does not help, how do I go about taking the date constraints off all the task on the plan ??? Thanks Nils "Trevor Rabey" wrote: > You cannot take an existing project and just type in a new overall duration > in the project summary task, because durations roll up from the tasks rather > than down from the summaries. > Provided you have no tasks with date constraints, changing the start date > will move the entire project to the new position in time. > But most project plans have some tasks with date constraints so you take > them off first, or use the adjust dates macro in the Analysis toolbar. > > > Trevor Rabey 0407213955 61 8 92727485 PERFECT PROJECT PLANNING > www.perfectproject.com.au > "Nils" <Nils(a)discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:6B707789-1327-4441-820C-5388B2B4973E(a)microsoft.com... > > Hello, > > > > I have a company project template which I need to amend, Iv managed to > > change the Project Start date but need to also reset the duration of the > > project ie the elapsed duration field. From: Trevor Rabey on 13 May 2008 11:43 You should use the Adjust Dates macro before you change the start date in Project Information. To remove date constraints, select the tasks, click on the Task Information icon on the top toolbar, then Advanced, then set the date constraint to ASAP. If the project network and predecessor links are not well modeled, if there are very many date constraints, the project will collapse when you do this.
