I built a new computer a year ago and I included a Sony Media Card Reader.
I used it a few times last year, but today I went to plug in a card from my
digital camera and it was not recognized. I went to Windows Explorer and
did not see the card reader listed.

I have not spotted anything on either the Device Manager or the Control
Panel that seems to address this. I did see on the Control Panel under
"Hardware and Sound" a selection for "Scanners and Cameras", but that did
not lead to anything.

I suppose that it is possible that the Card Reader is dead; it was a cheap
unit, but only 14 months old and seldom used, so I am hoping that is not it.

Any suggestions as to how I should proceed?

Thanks.

p.s. here is my system:
O/S: Windows Vista 32bit
CPU: Intel e6700
RAM: 4gb OCZ

Correction: I took another look at the Device Manager and saw the yellow
circle with exclamation point over the USB Mass Storage Device.
When I double-click on it I see "Windows is uninstalling this device. (Code
21)"

I clicked the "Check for solutions" button and then asked for additional
details. It shows the following:
Windows was able to successfully install device driver software, but
the driver software encountered a problem when it tried to run. The problem
code is 21.

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Users\Alan\AppData\Local\Temp\DMI1A3A.tmp.log.xml
C:\Windows\inf\usbstor.inf

I looked at the xml file and it was gobbledygook to me. The inf file shows
the devices that it is set up to use, but I do not see how this helps me.

Should I simply Uninstall and then reinstall?

Never mind. I found at Microsoft's website an instruction to simply reboot.
To my incredible surprise, that worked.

I have a RAID system that got corrupted the other night and had to be
rebuilt. I have no idea if this was the cause of the driver not working,
but perhaps it was. At any rate, the system now works fine. Go figure.
