There are currently four types of DSL....

dsl-<version>.iso: the standard isolinux version, which is used for
liveCD,
frugal, or traditional harddrive install.

dsl-<version>-syslinux.iso: boots using syslinux instead of isolinux,
used for some very old hardware that is no longer supported by isolinux.
Use syslinux version if booting fails with the standard iso.

dsl-<version>-embedded.zip: comes with qemu, for running inside of a host
Windows or Linux system.

dsl-<version>-vmx.zip: a virtual machine that will run in VMware or
VMware player.

frugal_lite.sh is our network install script and requires tomsrtbt linux:

I have run Ws98se on systems like that, and also I have run linux distros
on such. IMO or experience, graphical linux apps and Xwindows is not
quite as 'lean' as W98, especially a W98 slimmed down to the W95 explorer
and other tricks such as in the free 98lite strategies.

People report running 98lite on 20 meg ram 486 dx 66.

You will have more options with linux distros if you had a system with
some more horsepower in the form of ram and cpu. A lot of linux distros
run leaner than XP, but not many as lean as W98 with the 98 win explorer
replaced with the 95 win explorer.

DSL uses fluxbox & joe's window manager, which helps a lot.

Realize that the OS you are running on that old hardware is very old and
very insecure and very 'tired' -- and the hardware is kinda tired too.
Getting away from (that) Win (and Win in general) is a very good idea.
The OS is no longer supported, you can't 'upgrade' to newer and more
efficient browsers such as Firefox 3 and many other problems with the lack
of developer support for W98.

In order to be online and secure with W98, you need to make a lot of

Don't misunderstand me, I am not saying anything negative about DSl. I
guess you could say I'm saying something negative about your hardware, but
I am also supportive of using old hardware. I'm also supportive of
acquiring 'somebody else's' old hardware -- at this stage there are people
giving away hardware that is 3x as fast and has 4x as much ram as what you
are trying to run.

I mentioned 98lite just as an example of W98 running leaner. DSL's site
sez^1 that it can run with...

The limited hardware you are using is quite ok for linux use however,
as you may see, a lot of experience is probably called for,
particularly if the GUI is important for you, as I would expect.

An elegant way to begin using linux - which is a very modern system -
is to use hardware which is a bit more modern. With modest power and
not too small RAM, a live CD of a more full fat distro such as ubuntu
will get you started without the need for installation.

If you are determined to make use of the older hardware, put it to one
side until you have found your way around the easy stuff!

I windowsworld I found that a lot of what I thought I knew as fact was
a sort of illusion. In retrospect it was a way of keeping me from
knowing much about what I was using so I would continue buying the
proprietary software. Once I began using linux I started learning the
useful things!

I've installed DSL on a few p1's with that amount of RAM
and it worked fine.
Since your bios supports booting from a CD...
the problem may simply be that your CDROM is too old to read the cd that you
burned.
try popping in a newer 48x CDROM...
I know I could not use any of those old 12x (or whatever) CDROMs to boot my
machines
