Update: I couldn't figure it out, got frustrated and just reinstalled
windows.

I suspect that it may be Zone Alarm, so didn't reinstall Zone Alarm
package -- BTW, I was using the entire security suite which includes
Firewall, AntiVirus, Anti Spyware and Spam blocker. Although I've
used this suite for several years without problem I recently installed
an update so this might have been the problem.

Right now, I am relying on Windows firewall sp2 firewall, ince I
installed on clean hard drive and there was no opportunity for a
trojan, etc to "dial out". I don't want to do this forever. Any
suggestions on low maintenance, low footprint security packages? Not
sure I want to go without protection!

PS: One small problem after the reinstall. With laptop docked,
system cannot find the USB driver and I can't seem to use my wireless
mouse. When I undock, no problem. Any thoughts? Mouse is Logitech
laser mouse, but I'm not using the logitech (and have never used) the
logitech software. Never had a problem before. And, yes, I did
install the chipset driver upgrades.

Best,
Lisa

PPS: Ran memtest86 and no problems with the upgraded memory -- which
has been installed for last year and half.

(*Once you've established no issues for a 24 hour or more probationary
period.....)

It's a perfect time to install the ZA suite just the way you had it (now
while the OS is new and very few programs/updates are installed).

It certainly could remove or identify ZA as the cause.

If it does repeat the symptom after being fully updated, you could simply
boot to safe mode and run a system restore or remove ZA altogether.

I wouldn't throw out your security suite before verifying.

For what it's worth, since the day of the latest Firefox update a
couple weeks ago (?), the streaming Colbert show has caused 100% CPU
and general overload jerkiness about half the time, so it's either
something new on the page, or some bad update.

It can be mitigated by manually starting Firefox from a command window
with lowest priority. It's still 100% usage but doesn't overwhelm
everything else.

What it is, I don't know. I was hoping somebody else would discover
it and fix it.
