Access 97 seems to run ok on W7 x64. But for development I have
discovered a serious problem namely, that sometimes when code is saved,
the program freezes and dims, and it might be 10 minutes before it
becomes responsive again.

I have removed the virus checker so I don't think this is the culprit.

Does anyone have an idea of what the cause and solution might be. I
don't really want to have to do my main development work in a VM

(I was hoping an i5 750 with 8GB to go blisteringly fast and it
generally does, but this is unworkable)

I don't have W7 (or an installed A97) so this is just a guess: Have you
checked how much free space you have left on your hard drive?

This is a new box with 2TB! I hope that will last for a while

Just remembered to try compatibility mode. I'll do that and see how it
goes

If you have problems still, I just set up a 64-bit Windows 7 box
yesterday with Virtual PC running WinXP. The client needed to run a
1983 dBase II app compiled in 1983 (and it all worked just fine and
was easy), but it's worth a try to see if you can get it working on
WinXP. If so, it might just not be worth it to bother trying to get
it working under Windows 7.

FWIW, I know there have been problems getting A97 to run well under
Terminal Server on Windows Server 2008, and maybe even on 2003.
Perhaps some of the problematic things that are present in the
server OS's have made their way into the workstation Windows
version.

That's interesting - I was wondering if any of the Win3.x code
in A97 implied 16 bit dll's: I guess not.

A97 had a Win3.x keyboard input loop. This causes A97 to
appear to have 99% cpu italicisation, and to heavily load
terminal services sessions. It is possible that this might
load Win7 the same way it loads terminal services sessions,
because Win7 has a much higher level of isolation, and all
those keyboard input queries have to go through several
more layers now.

However, something which actually did cause A97 to freeze
like you describe, on Windows 2000, was broken network
links in "My Network Places", and broken mapped drives.
Dunno what caused that, but it's worth looking for. Make sure
your mapped drives really do exist and that you have permissions
for them.
