I cannot find this information anywhere/if it is indeed possible with
UK numbers but..

Can one dial directly to somebody's Mobile telephone voicemail to
leave a message (i.e. without ringing the person/phone, just to leave
a message).

It can be done in Ireland via 086 5 xxxx (or 087,etc.).

Is this possible/similar in the UK?

You can do this Orange to Orange by dialling your own orange voicemail
and sending a message.

It can also be done on Vodafone by dialling 12107xxx where 07xxx is the
actual mobile number of the person who you want to voicemail.

I don't know about the other networks voicemail systems, but ISTR that
T-Mobile also started to offer this service a few years ago.
