I'm running OS X 10.4.4 on a 1.67 MHz 17" PowerBook. At home I use a LInksys
WRT54GC wireless router which is shared by two Macs. The problem I have is
that when returning from somewhere else where I have made a wireless
connection I have difficulty making a wireless connection at home.
The PowerBook is fully shutdown after using an away-from-home wireless
connection. Upon returning home it takes a song-and-dance sequence of
powering on-and-off and renewing the DHCP lease to make a connection.
Sometimes this leas renewal takes three or four times, and with or without
interjected powering-downs followed by powering-ups.

I'm fully open to advice and/or suggestions. And, there will be a myriad of
thanks directed to anyone whose suggestions eliminate this annoyance.

Have you considered/experimented with setting up different locations
(generated via the Network prefpane, accessed via the apple menu) for
different wireless networks?

I've got a location for home and another for campus, which lets me have
different wireless (and wired) options configured (e.g. vpn) in
different places. I've had problems with the "automatic" setting in the
past, which is why I started generating locations.

'indiana' is a 'nolnn' and 'hoosier' is a 'solkk'. Indiana doesn't solkk.

James-

I also have that PowerBook. Sometimes it automatically lock on to some
previously used (trusted) base stations and not others, but I've never had
a problem with DHCP leases. It seems to make a difference whether you
select the base station from the Menu Bar icon, or if you choose
"Other..." and select it there. Selecting from the "Other..." menu seems
to give it priority.

After returning from visiting a distant hotspot, the PowerBook is
sometimes still looking for the distant wireless station. When that
happens, it doesn't switch back to the local base station until I click on
the menu bar icon and reselect it. Once selected, it picks up and works
normally. I think the IP address is assigned to the PB's MAC address, so
it keeps the same number until the base station is reset.

I have a similar setup but with 10.4.3 and a Netgear 834G. When
returning home after a trip (or after a power outage) I just click on
the tool bar wireless icon, and then select the correct network for home
from the drop down list. Everything else works automatically. That
seems to work for three different Mac (mine and a neighbour).

My Powerbook does seem to otherwise look for the remote network I was
using at a hotel or wherever I was when I put it to sleep. Mostly it
sleeps here, so it just wakes and connects to the existing network.
Same for my iMac (which I normally just sleep overnight). So the
behaviour you report sounds unusual to me.
