From: treadmill-- with the great taste of fish on 3 Jun 2008 04:23 Please could anyone tell me how to disable the start and stop recording sounds in Windows Mobile 6? I don't want to remove all sounds and notifications from programs, and these annoying sounds do not show up in the Sounds and Notifications section of Settings. So I found one of the offending sounds in the Windows folder and tried to rename and then delete it. How can I delete files in my Windows folder? This is just an annoying sound - it's not like it's an important system file. Failing any of this, can anyone recommend an alternative sound recording software? Obviously, one that doesn't chirrup maniacally when you ask it to start. (Actually, thinking about it, this is becoming my preferred option - getting rid of yet more Microsoft annoying-ware!)

(just a guess - it works with several other apps.) -- -- Werner "Menneisyys" Ruotsalainen - Microsoft MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices Please see the Pocket PC Mag Expert Blog (including mine) at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/ - you will definitely like it. (just a > guess - it works with several other apps.) Since these WAVs are system files it takes quite a lot of work to do that, as I've discovered since making my original post. Basically, it involved running EnableRAPI (more info here: http://blogs.lanlogic.net/blogs/tom/archive/2007/12/05/how-to-remove-files-from-a-windows-mobile-device.aspx) which didn't originally work on my device (Tytn ii with WM6) until I found a couple of registry keys that needed changing on my device, on this page: http://www.breaksoft.com/Blog/Posts/2005/8/Mobile_Registry_Editor_FAQ.aspx. Even then it wouldn't let me rename the files, so I created a new WAV with the same name and copied that to the device to replace the original. Phew. Does anyone know of a quicker way to rename or delete system files? Every day it seems I get another reason to hate Microsoft even more. Why can't they just let people do what they want with their own devices? Does Microsoft seriously consider how much they're alienating their customers? If they made things easy to change and customize I'd like that a lot, but making me do a lot of research and work for what should be a simple thing just makes me angry. No wonder Linux is gaining popularity.

A silent .wav file saved to the same directory with the same filename will do the trick.

Personally, I think mobile devices are a special case. Have you ever bought a retail-box copy of Windows CE or Windows Mobile? Me neither. You and I, or any other developers and/or users of Windows Mobile devices are NOT Microsoft's customers. The OEMs- Samsung, HTC, T-Mobile, etc. are, and any errant app we develop or run, or ROM-based file we delete that screws up operation of the device becomes THEIR problem. > If they made things easy to change and customize I'd like that a lot, > but making me do a lot of research and work for what should be a > simple thing just makes me angry. No wonder Linux is gaining popularity. How many mobiles are running Linux right now? |
