From: Steve Hodgson on 22 Apr 2008 14:05 I 'upgraded' to Office 2008 thinking it would have better compatibility with the recent versions of Office on the PC as I exchange files with Windows far more than any other platform. It's been pretty disappointing to find Excel files that worked on the PC and in Office 2004 that no longer open in Office 2008. Today it was the turn of a report template I completed last night and mailed-in to some colleagues only to find it has a severely broken layout upon receipt. With rivals like Mellel, Nisus Write Express and iWork available the only reason to keep using Office has been compatibility but this no longer works. I reckon there will have to be a 12.1 release soon but in the interim I may start to think about going back in time to 2004. -- Cheers, Steve The reply-to email address is a spam trap. I bought Office 2004 and got 2008 last month using the Microsoft guaranteed upgrade offer. I have not yet installed either of them preffering to use NeoOffice, which is good enough for my needs at the moment. My wife needs Office on her laptop which is the only reason I spent the money. Looks like I will be sticking to NeoOffice. -- Phil http://www.philwalters.co.uk

I could stomach the loss of VBA, but it's actually slower on my MB with 2GB RAM than 2004 is, and particular functions (e.g. charting) are now useless to me (can't cope with plots of more than a few hundred points). Word 2008 OTOH is slicker and quicker than 2004. I haven't used PowerPoint 2008 but the themes look fresh; I just wish they'd allowed motion paths as in PP 2003. I have had a few crashes too.

Maybe if I had Office installed I wouldn't have spelt preferring wrong in my previous post :-) -- Phil http://www.philwalters.co.uk

I don't use it myself but my son, who needs it for his course work, is so frustrated with it he's gone over to NeoOffice which he tells me does the job without too many accompanying screw ups.
