From: sheana on 1 Jul 2008 10:46 Why do some MS Discussion groups have "public" in them, and other don't? Thanks in advance.
From: sheana on 1 Jul 2008 11:08 Also, can you provide me with a link to the "non-public" newsgroups? Thanks again. "sheana" wrote: > Why do some MS Discussion groups have "public" in them, and other don't? > Thanks in advance.

That depends to which NNTP host you connect. The microsoft.private.* newsgroups are carried only by Microsoft's private NNTP host to which you need a login (but which is still publicly available). They don't propagate those posts to other worldwide NNTP hosts. If you connect to Microsoft's public NNTP host then you get the microsoft.public.* newsgroups. If you connect to a non-Microsoft NNTP host, it is possible that someone managed to get a group defined which that NNTP host carries but which Microsoft probably won't. You can name a newsgroup anything you want and you might carry it on your own NNTP host but that doesn't mean anyone else is going to carry that newsgroup. For example, some ISPs or NSPs will include newsgroups that are specifically for support of their own service but they don't propagate those newsgroups to other NNTP hosts because they're only interested in providing the newsgroup for helping their own customers (there's no point in non-customers participating in those newsgroups). microsoft.beta.* should be self-evident as to why those exist.

For private Microsoft groups, read: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/support.mspx This only provides access to the private spyware groups. You may need to be a customer of their other products to get to other private groups; for example, if you are an MSDN subscriber then you probably get access to other private groups. They're probably private for a reason.
From: Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook] on 2 Jul 2008 01:45 Microsoft also has private news groups with restricted access. -- Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook] Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact.
