Is there a way to display the date of the most recent update of a website. I
use Safari and would preferably like such a display to be automatic.

Many thanks in advance for solutions, etc.

I'm afraid you'll need to explain exactly what it is you mean by
"display the most recent update of a website".

The headers are available in Firefox via CMD-I, and you can check the
modified date for the page. You can also see the headers in the
terminal via curl: curl -I YOURURL

As far as I can see, you can't get this information from Safari --
which seems strange.

What I want to know is the date and time that a website was posted. Since my
opening posting in this thread I have learned that the Cmd-I in FireFox will
give me the information wanted, but an equivalent is not available in Safari.
That thanks to William Mitchell's response in this thread.

Unfortunately I apparently spoke too soon. I tested FireFox on a number of
different sites and the "modified" time was always right now! What I want is
to know when the site was posted, not when I accessed it.
