I know this is probably a dumb question because I everything eventually
wears out (entropy at work). I read on a newsgroup that someone upgraded
their PA main speakers after a few years because they sounded muffled from
wearing out.

They do. They also break in and sound better in there mid life than new or
old. Recone or replace drivers is the way to go rather than throw them away
if they still fit the purpose, and we're talking huge amounts of use before
that should be necessary.

Certainly the Rubber 'Roll Surround' (cone suspension) on my Tannoy Gold
'HPD' Monitors has degraded and turned back into its constituent latex
form....
Corrugated sections of cone edges wear out over the years, paper cones
absorb moisture as well...
Silicone mastic dissolved in carbon Tetrachloride can be painted on the edge
corrugations to sort them out - but will change the fundamental resonance of
the driver.

They probably sounded "muffled" because the high freq drivers
were blown. Speakers do not "wear out" after a few years.

Not everything. Evolution defies this well established law of physics and
biology and says that from out of nowhere somethign better comes out. Wish
my car would do the same thing :)

Either they blew out their HF drivers or they were really cheap speakers.
What brand were they? If they were so cheap that they wore out in only a
few years then it would be best to get some decent speakers.
