OK, here's another one. My mother board will only support 266FSB however I
have updated the BIOS. I have previously asked what would be better, a
used Athlon Socket A, or a new Duron Socket A. But, I notice I can get a
Sempron socket A for ten dollars more. The sempron is a 333 FSB however.
Can I put a Sempron in my mother board? Will it just run slower at 266 or
will it not run at all?

Paul.

It probably won't run at all. It COULD run, if the mainboard manufacturer
released a BIOS version to support it. However, as the hardware doesn't
directly support that chip, it is highly unlikely that a firmware release
would support it. (why write the code for the 3 or 4 people who MIGHT want
to do that?) -Dave

What make and model mobo is it?

Does the manufacturer have a list of CPUs approved for it?

If the BIOS is compatible with the 333 FSB Socket A Sempron, it should
simply run slower with a 266 MHz FSB. But it seems that Sempron speed
ratings are exaggerated compared to Athlon ratings, i.e., an Athlon
XP2400+ gives roughly the same performance as a Socket A Sempron 3000+

BTW, the lowest max. temperature rating I've seen for any CPU is 55C,
or 131F, for a very old AMD 486-586 hybrid.
