From: RnR on 30 Sep 2008 22:55 I need to replace a dvd burner for my daughter's E1405 and I think I'll stay with the internal one rather than the usb external one. Aside from Dell.com, any other good sources for a new E1405 burner? Also I haven't yet looked at the manual but I gather these aren't any harder to replace than say a keyboard or the ram under the keyboard, correct?
From: Ben Myers on 1 Oct 2008 00:46 The DVD burner for this model, like the other E-series Inspirons (E1505, E1705) has a straight, flat, very-much-vanilla black front bezel, doesn't it? The shape of the bezel is extremely important. There is a new one for sale on eBay for $67 including shipping. The OEM model listed is NEC ND-6500A. The Dell part number is shown as GH766. I've dealt with Centrix Intl vai the internet. Their stuff has always been good. They show GH966 at $69 + shipping. Used ones are a little less expensive. Not sure what Dell charges. The important thing to consider in replacing laptop drives is that the front bezel needs to match exactly, especially its shape. Well, maybe it can be a different color. There are sometimes little adapters and brackets needed to make the drive fit inside the particular laptop chassis. You can always scavenge these from the old drive. There are a number of manufacturers of the slim laptop DVD/RW, also used in many SFF systems and small 1U or 2U servers. .... Ben Myers > Ben, thank you for the information. I could not find the gh966 on the Centrix site yet but did find the gh766 for $69. I'll keep looking but just wanted to know if you meant gh966? Meanwhile I'm looking for the service manual too on dell's site to see how this part goes in / out to do the service. I've seen this manual before so just a matter of finding it again. I might have bookmarked it. Appreciate your help Ben... thank you.

It appears that this dvd drive is not hard to remove but I'll see how it really goes in a few minutes. I want to verify the actual part number before ordering. |
