New@$800. per too much? What tops are you mating these to? I have a pair of LA-118s, powered by a QSC PL380 and Ashly processor, that I use with a pair of LA-212 tops for small/medium size bar gigs and corporate work. They sound great in this scenario and I've been very happy with them. Plenty of low end that goes very low. They're actually pretty easy to move around too - stacked one on top of the other, with a hand-truck on the side. They do, however, take a lot of power -- and if you ever see yourself running more than 2 per side... I also have LA-400s for larger jobs. Really an apples/oranges comparison with LA-118, and both have their plus/minus. As George said, you really need a minimum of two LA-400 per side. 4 per side will make serious noise. Power requirements are considerably less for the same output. $800 US/apiece new is reasonable for LA-118.. There's some on ebay now for around that...but of course shipping can be painful... With all the praise I have for my existing EAW products, though, there are some troubling stories surfacing about the company and it's service. Something to think about. Hope this is helpful, Mike

I've been on the "employee-side" of a company which was purchased by another large publicly-traded company, which publicly said everything would stay the same - while privately outsourcing everything to India, Sweden and China - solely for lower labor rates - with little or no regard for customer quality or service. I'm not saying that's the case with EAW/Loud, but the spin sounds awfully familiar. And of course you can't blame a business for wanting to be more profitable: I just wish they'd call it what it is. I haven't seen a price drop in EAW gear yet. Call me ... whatever ... but everything else being equal, I'd prefer my American dollars went to an American employee. Also "troublesome" is the departure of Dave Gunness, EAW's Director of R&D who did an awful lot of good stuff there. ( http://www.linkedin.com/pub/3/B84/981 ) You would think a company that has used a guy's name in branding their technology (Gunness Focusing) would do everything they could to keep him there! Of course, Ken Berger (EAW co-founder and Loud Sr. Vice President) resigned in late 2006. (http://www.mi-pro.co.uk/news/26079/Loud-buys-Martin-Audio) There have also been some bizarre and almost unbelievable reports of replacement drivers/parts taking months to acquire, and long delivery delays on new merchandise. (Search LAB on prosoundweb.com.) Finally, I've been watching very closely the development of their UX8800 processor - as I've heard that it's an incredible technology which can provide a dramatic improvement in quality to existing boxes. But it's been available for a long time and they still seem to be having very serious software quality issues; Lock-ups, random output delays, etc.. (http://forums.eaw.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=18) I've downloaded and installed their PC software and was unimpressed when compared with the ease of use of Ashly's Protea or Harmon's System Architect systems. And they still haven't found the time to add Gunness Focusing support for their current entire product line. (Let alone discontinued products.) I'm still a big fan of EAW. Every single box I own is EAW. And I'm seriously considering purchasing more. But it is troubling... Enough that I'm "just looking" elsewhere. Mike

I have heard great things about this yorkville sub, however, although larger it may be easier to transport: http://www.yorkville.com/products.asp?type=29&cat=38&id=317 -- Michael Gaster Gaster Engineering
