Thanks for your concern, Doc. Living on the Pacific Rim we get fairly used to earthquakes, although this one was pretty serious. Usually they are centred offshore or in sparsely populated areas; this one made the news because it affected Gisborne. I live about 130 miles away and felt nothing. In fact, I didn't know there had been an earthquake until I saw your CNN link. The East coast has had some major shocks and the worst was in Napier in 1931, where there were many causalties and severe damage. The last quake felt here in Tauranga was over three years ago, was centred 20 miles off-shore, rattled the windows and caused crockery and ornaments to fall, but no structural damage. (It did crack the concrete in my driveway and I had to have it repaired). The report you reference was written by an Englishman who would be unaccustomed to such events. Locals here tend to take it in our stride, having grown up with them since childhood. Note that he said there was confusion for 15 -20 seconds... This is NOT a use of the "Royal We" because I know of no other use in Standard English whereby one can refer to a group which includes onself, WITHOUT using "we" or "us".
