Now that I'm able to get copies of programs onto DVD, I would to be able to
edit out ads and such. I have successfully copied the program to a DVD+RW.
I can access the files on the PeaCea.

Now what?

It seems like the .VOB files are the only *really* important ones to use.
How do I get these into MovieMaker (doesn't recognize .VOB)? Is there
another app I should be looking at?

Hi BobF,

The methods to do this are as varied (and sometimes problematic) as anything
else nowadays!

Do you want to edit out by hand or automate? Automated is good but
sometimes it takes a lot of work and tweaking for certain shows or certain
channels to be detected correctly, as there is no one way to detect
commercials unfortunately (of course that's by design!).

I haven't used Windows Movie Maker, but VOB's are essentially mpeg's. Rip
the VOB's to PC (there's several good freeware utilities available to do
that).. If Movie Maker won't open a VOB directly, rename it to .mpg
instead of .vob and try again. However, you may have to re-author your DVD
using an MPEG to VOB utility in order to make a DVD out of it again. Not
certain.

I convert all my recordings to high-quality AVI rather than burn DVD format,
the quality is acceptable to me and my standalone DVD player at the TV reads
DivX or XVid encoded AVI's just fine, so I write data DVD R/W's with AVI
files on them play them that way. There are no fancy titles or DVD
interactive features, and some DVD navigation features during playback are
not available, I don't need this so my solution is fine for me.

If you have Nero, you may be able to use Nero to manually cut your
commercials and re-author DVD's. I've not done this. I have Nero retail, a
quick look suggests the possibility but I don't know for sure.

All my recording is done by SageTV on a PC so I don't have to get the
recordings from somewhere else like you're doing. Make my solution much
easier :-) My shows record directly to .mpg on PC. I have a free program
called ComSkip running against those automatically, ComSkip identifies the
location and length of commercial blocks (really well but some tweaking
effort was required for certain shows or channels to be detected correctly).
Then the free Mencoder program runs automtically when ComSkip finishes, to
cut the commercials and re-encode to DivX AVI files. Later I move these
AVI's to my media player or to a DVD R/W as data files, for the TV in the
livingroom. If for some reason ComSkip didn't detect the commercials
successfully and some of the show was cut out, I still have the original
..mpg recording and can either try again or just convert to AVI without the
commercials cut (depending on the level of effort I feel like making toward
getting a perfect cut of commercials!).

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell you a better way given that
you're not recording on a PC. Using something like my method, you could rip
your .vob files to PC, rename as .mpg and cut the commercials with ComSkip.
Mencoder (I believe) does not have to re-encode but can cut commercials and
leave it as a .mpg. Then you could re-author back to DVD. Just a thought.
Not a 1-click solution though.

Thanks for the quick response Sue!

Right now, I'll be happy with manual ...

I tried renaming to various extensions; mpg, avi, etc ... Interestingly,
they play fine with any extension in with vlc media player, BUT MovieMaker
will only recognize them as audio files.

I have Nero ... I'll give that a try. Unfortunately, my -regular- DVD
player won't deal with RW media. My intent is to transfer to the PC using
RW, then reauthor to write-once media.

Yep, I'm sure there are at least as many approaches/apps for this as
there are for audio work :-))

Thanks again - off to fire up Nero!!!

Have you ever noticed timing problems doing this? I've had times where I
just renamed the VOBs to do editting in Vegas, for example, & noticed that
audio & video seem a little out of sync, getting worse the further along the
timeline you go. But I've also had intermittent sync problems using a
variety of DVD ripping programs as well.

Some programs I've tried do lose sync, yes I've experienced that. I haven't
had any sync issues with Mencoder (so far... knock on wood!).
