From: Blinky the Shark on 21 Mar 2007 23:52 I'm going to totally break tradition. I'm going to report that... ....I just got some new hardware and getting it to talk Mandrake 2006 was not only a breeze but it works like gangbusters. I wanted a new scanner *right now*, and I didn't do any of the usual homework to see what works with Linux without seven layers of dependency hell and the need for some kind of magic dance with a dead chicken and some bat's eyes. IOW, I'd resigned myself to "what the hell, I have a couple of Win systems I can use it with". Sad, yeah. But that's where I was. :) I came home with an Epson Perfection V100 Photo. 3200 dpi, 35mm film and neg carrier, $100 (not a sale price) US. After installing on an old W2K box, I Googled for Linux info. The *first hit* I got led me to a site called avasys.jp -- a site for Epson scanner and printer drivers. It looks like Avasys and Epson are connected. It indicated two RPMs for Mdk. Together not over something like 600KB, as I recall. Installed them. No dependency issues. With absolutely no setup required, they gave me access to the scanner through The GIMP *and* a through a nice standalone GUI scanner interface called iscan. Perhaps I'm the last guy (or shark, if you will) to discover this site. But I tell ya, this little experience was Pure Gold. I don't know if you're the last person to discover avasys.jp, but I've known about it and the support via 'iscan' for Linux for several years. Asked about scanners, I recommend Epson for that reason. I've had very good experience with refurb stuff via the Epson online store. Canon could take a lesson - and then I might even consider one of their digital cameras.

I had it working in 5 minutes in Linux - Took two weeks to figure out I had to remove M$'s "Net Framework" to get the HP software to install under doze. But all worked out. I have two printers on my home network in case one fails (I'm the paranoid type). All machines and OS's can talk to the others printer. It's a 4 tank printer and I can't believe how fast, reliable and the quality for $30 freakin dollars. What happened with scanners? Seems like I recall them being like $60 for a decent one and now they are all $100 and more :( -- Linux Help: http://rsgibson.com/linux.htm Email - rsgibson(a)verizon.borg Replace borg with net

Wait til you have to get a new set of cartridges. It's often cheaper to buy a new printer. > > What happened with scanners? Barebones are still pretty cheap - it adds when you want to be able to scan transparencies.

I got my $50 Canon printer for free with a laptop purchase. So far it's been good to me (albeit only on Windows). > What happened with scanners? My first flatbed - a Microtek SCSI unit - cost at least two or three hundred bucks. :) -- Blinky RLU 297263 Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://blinkynet.net/comp/uip5.html |
