From: stef.bm on 19 Jul 2008 00:06 Hi, Running smartphone with WM 6+. All of a sudden, I can no longer change ANY settings, whether it is sounds, home screen, etc. On anything related to settings, I get the error message: "Settings Could Not Be Opened" How can I fix this without "clearing storage"? Thanks.
From: Helio Diamant - MS-MVP/Mobile Devices on 21 Jul 2008 09:17 I have had that on a Motorola Q9 smartphone. Let me warn you: this is just the beginning of your trouble. It will get worse up to the point that your device will not turn on anymore. The point is that something in the memory of your device has got corrupt and from now on it just propagates. Only a Clear Storage will solve you the problem. If you are still able to do so, install a Backup Software like that from www.spritesoftware.com and save a backup. Maybe you will be able to restore it after the hard-reset without returning to the problem together with the data. As a second plan, synchronize everything you can: outlook data, favorites, files, etc. Then Clear Storage and begin by trying to restore the backup. If the phone still works alright after the restore, you are saved. If not, Clear Storage again and sync back the data to the phone. In this case, third party programs will need to be re-installed and user settings like quick-dial, rigntones, etc will need to be redefined . -- ---- Helio Diamant MS-MVP/Mobile Devices Editor - PocketPCFreak.com "stef.bm" <nomail(a)invalid.nul> wrote in message news:%23wuscTV6IHA.2220(a)TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Hi, > > Running smartphone with WM 6+. > > All of a sudden, I can no longer change ANY settings, whether it is > sounds, home screen, etc. > > On anything related to settings, I get the error message: > > "Settings Could Not Be Opened" > > How can I fix this without "clearing storage"? > > Thanks.
From: stef on 21 Jul 2008 15:04 Hi, Thanks so much for your reply. I was trying to avoid "clear storage" but it looks unavoidable at this point. The only problem being, I can no longer sync using ActiveSync, since this problem occurred.... I am constantly getting the error message: Cannot establish connection, etc.... I must be able to sync my phone book before using "clear storage" as otherwise I will lose too many contacts, etc..... Get a copy of the free and excellent PIM Backup from http://www.dotfred.net and backup your contacts and calendar to your storage card prior to hard resetting. (And turn off storage card encryption first, if you use it- those encrypted files will be inaccessable after a hard reset.)
From: stef on 22 Jul 2008 16:52 Todd, I have downloaded PIM Backup and used it to backup to storage card. After using "clear storage", I use PIM Backup to restore contacts, etc. Are you sure this restore will work...?
