From: Neil on 21 Jun 2008 19:50 Yesterday I stopped being able to download mail from my ISP (AT&T) to Outlook Express (6.0). When I try, I get the message: "An unknown error has occurred, server: pop.att.yahoo.com. Protocol POP3, Port 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x80004005. I'm able to see my mail at AT&T Yahoo Webmail; but I can't download it. (Have been downloading from that account to Outlook Express for several years now.) I Googled that error and I saw recommendations to: a) clear out the Inbox in my web mail, and try again; b) to rename Inbox.dbx and reopen Outlook Express, creating a new Inbox (that one was from Microsoft); and to turn off any antivirus software. I did all three of those things, and it didn't make any difference. Furthermore, I have two PCs on my home network, and mail from the AT&T Yahoo account is downloaded to both PCs using Outlook Express on each PC. Both PCs are getting the same error (and both started at the same time). So it seems unlikely that it's something with my PC. Furthermore, Outlook Express is also downloading mail from my gmail account, and it does that without any problems. So, again, if it was a problem with Outlook Express, it seems that it would affect the gmail download, as well (though not necessarily). Furthermore, I am able send mail from the AT&T Yahoo account. So if it were a permission thing, then sending mail would be affected. I'm totally stumped. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Neil

If it's a U.S., or CA, Yahoo account and you're not subscribed to Yahoo Mail Plus, then you can't access the account in Outlook Express. Configuring POP Yahoo! From: PA Bear [MS MVP] on 21 Jun 2008 21:39 Most of the time, that error points to (temporary) problems on the (POP3) server's end, not yours. The fact that you can Send from the account using OE is moot since you're using a different server (i.e., the SMTP server). The fact that you can Receive mail from Google using the same Port 995 is moot since you're using a different POP3 server. The fact that you receive mail on the account's webmail page is moot since that doesn't involve the POP3 server. You might try... IE (yes, IE) Tools | Internet Options | Privacy | Sites: type in yahoo.com and Allow cookies. Otherwise, wait to see if the problem is automagically corrected after a day or so. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Neil wrote: > Yesterday I stopped being able to download mail from my ISP (AT&T) to > Outlook Express (6.0). Quite probably there is a transient server issue, given what the op has tried for remedy, and especially since the error is appearing on 2 separate computers. Time may be the ultimate fix if that is the case. -- norm

As for time remedying it, that was my original thought. It's been at least 2 days now, so I don't think it'll be anytime soon, if at all. Anyway, I contacted AT&T Yahoo support via online chat yesterday, giving them the same info as I posted here, and they basically had nothing to add to my troubleshooting, but told me to call advanced tech support. I told her I didn't want to sit on the phone with anyone, but would prefer to chat or e-mail. She said that wasn't an option, so I said never mind. After that, while continuing to search Google links, I saw someone who had the same problem back in January and who, he said, sat on the phone for 2 hours with them, but didn't get anywhere. Apparently, according to what I read in my Google search, a lot of people have had this problem with AT&T Yahoo, and it seems to be related to certain servers or something. But no one seems to have a solution. I decided to give up. I added my AT&T Yahoo account to my Gmail account, letting Google get my messages from the AT&T Yahoo server, and then downloading them to Outlook Express from Gmail. Works fine, and I don't have to worry about this nonsense anymore. Thanks, Neil |
