I am running server 2003 . I use WSUS and when the updates for KB968816 and
KB967723 came out a few days ago neither of my servers downloaded them. Then
all of a sudden one day one of the computers downloaded it and allowed me to
install it with no problems. The Windows update file for the server with
errors on it still is below

Typically this is indicative of a delay in downloading the content at the
WSUS Server.

Here it looks like it might be "bad content" in the Download folder;
perhaps it was "housecleaned" by the WUAgent on the other server(s), which
then allowed the successful download from the WSUS Server.

But the an attempt to *DELETE* a file in a SoftwareDistribution\Download
subfolder failed with error 0x80070005

Here's the other update with the same failures.

Lacking specific knowledge of what was done to the ~\SoftwareDistribution or
~\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder permissions, and being able to
explicitly reverse any such changes, my recommendation is to let the WUAgent
build a new SoftwareDistribution folder tree and download the content again.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service (net stop wuauserv)
2. Rename the existing SoftwareDistribution folder to
SoftwareDistribution.BROKEN
3. Start the Automatic Updates service (net start wuauserv)
4. Run this command: wuauclt /detectnow to start a fresh detection/download
sequence.

Have same issue but when I tried to rename the folder (with Update service
stopped) I got a notice which said it was read-only, in use, etc. I am
logged in as administrator.

I think there may be some confusion here.

This thread is discussing downloads by the *client*, and how to remediate
those issues on the client.

The "Update Services" service has nothing to do with client-side operations.
But perhaps I've misunderstood your ambigous reference to the "Update
service"? There is the "Automatic Updates" service on the client side of the
connection, and the "Update Services" service on the server side of the
connection. Semantic accuracy is very important to eliminating confusion,
resulting in bad advice and wasted time. Additionally, since the original
poster has never responded to this thread, we don't even know that the
recommendations worked, or were appropriate for the specific scenario
described.

What exactly is your issue? May I suggest you start from scratch, in a new
thread, and describe your specific situation so that we can properly address
it without the confusion of misunderstood scenarios and unrelated
information?
