Hi,
I'm getting my first Mac this week, an iBook, and I've never used one
before.
Looking forward to messing about with it and would like any advice on what
apps to put on it.
Such as a html/text editor, messenger client, office, mail/newsgroups,
browsers, media player etc.
Free software mainly........ or not too pricey :)

Cheers

Many of the apps you asked about already come with your new iBook, so I
would wait until you've had some time to use what you have, and then ask
for those apps you think you might need.

Agreed. One of the great things about buying a Mac is that all
the "Essential" applications that the average Joe would need a
computer for are already their. Not so in the PC world.

Its really a matter of personal preference as far as which apps are
essential. For me, iCal, Address Book, and Apple's other apps are
essential for what I use my Mac for. Apple's Safari web browser works
fine for me, but Firefox is a close contender.

For playing media, I use Apple's Quicktime and iTunes software.

For html editting, there are tons of apps out there. For starters, check
the downloads section of Apple's web site to see what's available.
