I have a Debian Sarge box set up that doesn't have Gnome or KDE
installed on it. I want to run ethereal, but I'm not sure what I
need. Do I need a window manager of some sort? Where does Gtk fit
into the picture?

Thanks

I've got ethereal, I need to know what I need to run it.

Your package manager tells you that. Not us.

Wait a second. Is this a trick question? My answer is: "ethereal".
You need ethereal to run ethereal. But you have ethereal, so normally
you shouldn't be asking this odd question. And you're running debian,
so if you installed it with any of the package tools debian provides out
of the box the dependencies were taken care of automagically.

Let's see: you need to be running an X server, or you need a graphical
interface. I think that's what you're on about with your question below
about "gtk" (the gimp toolkit).

Maybe what you want is "tethereal", the console version of ethereal.
