We just added a couple of subs to our small PA system. My drummer
purchased them a while back from a local (and well respected) speaker
reconer here in town and we finnaly decided to start using them.

They are a different than other subs i have seen. They are almost a
square cube with 2 round ports on the bottom front and a rectangular
port about 6-8 inches high that crosses the top front of the cab.

a simple drawing of the front is here
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v359/darklurkeroftruth/fun/fane-sub.jpg

the cabs have no markings on them and appear to be custom built. There
are no other ports and I cannot tell how the speakers are loaded (cant
see the speaker)

They are loaded with 18" Fane speakers (i dont know which model, i
have been prodding the drummer to ask the guy who built them but all i
have gotten from him is that they are 8ohm speakers)

So, i crossed them at 100hz and powered them, 1 a side with a
Behringer EP2500. They sounded pretty nice, had good volume and thump
and we didn't seem to have to push them very hard (no amp clipping
yay!)

So i guess my questions would be.

What would that sub box design be called? and how are Fane speakers in
comparison to other MI level speakers?

Looks like it might be a 6th order band-pass sub. More popular in home
and car stereo designs rather then live sound, though they're out
there.

Here is something very similar. It would be considered a very
coloured speaker enclosure but for live subs this is not a big concern.
The circular holes in your diagram are likely ducted ports. The length
of tubing inside is used to tune the cab to the speaker. If you can, use
a sub filter below 40hz. and they will last much longer.

Looks like a copy of these:

Except it's quite obvious where the speaker is here.

Hey thanks, that looks really close. On the ones we have there is a
dark mesh screen where the metal grill on the EV sub is. i'll get
another look at them tomorrow.

I have googling that EV sub you pictured and have not found anything.
It would be nice to get the specs on it and compare it to what we are
using.
