When the To: button is pushed the access the contacts a fatal error pops up
and outlook locks up. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Not without providing more info like version of Outlook, exact error message
and what's logged to the Event Viewer.

It is Outlook 2000 running on Windows XP Professional. The exact error reads
as follows:
! Microsoft Word
Unable to complete the operation. A fatal error has occured in Outlook.

Does the same happen when you set Outlook as the mail editor or access the
Address Book from within Outlook?
