Try Slim Browser. I use it when Firefox can't do something that IE usually does. http://www.flashpeak.com/
From: larrymcg on 18 Apr 2008 19:49 When it first became available, I tried Safari on my WinXP. Worked fine but I took it off after a few days. I found that I couldn't live without my favorite Firefox extensions, especially the ad blocker. I'd forgotten how many ads were appearing on my favorite sites since I hadn't seen them in a long time. Firefox v 2.0.0.14 works fine for me. --Larry Phoenix wrote: > I've been having trouble with Firefox lately--or maybe it's my laptop. From: Rick Paul on 19 Apr 2008 02:28 Well, I'm using IE, which I prefer over any others I've tried. That said, I just tried Safari now again after your mention as I noted that it got updated with the (seemingly?) weekly iTunes update that somehow gets forced on me when I least want it to happen (oh, I know, I can say no, but then it'll get forced on me at another time unless I remember to do it explicitly). The previous version of Safari was simply crashing on trying to start it, but this latest version does seem to work. First impressions: It seems to work okay on many of the pages I tried with it. Unlike IE and Firefox, it ignores my Windows settings such as scroll bar and window styles, for example using a rounded scrolllbar instead of the old Win98-style that I'm using for all my other applications. I find that very annoying when applications think they know better how I want my applications to look! Then again, the way QuickTime forces itself into parts of the system where I don't want it (it seems to have yet again taken over as my default MP3 player in IE, despite my having Windows Media Player as my system default and never having switched anything on that in IE that I can recall, and I can't remember how I fixed that last time it took over like that), it's not really surprising that an Apple app would think it knows better when it comes to user choices. Another thing it doesn't do right, but neither does Firefox in this case (though I thought I'd got it doing that at one point in the past!), is process a .WAX (stream setup file for Windows Media) properly. It's supposed to hand it off to Windows Media Player, which then reads the contents and starts the WMA file referenced streaming. Instead, it just loads it as a text window in the browser. This is a problem for my main web site (www.rickpaul.info) since I've been using WMA for my media format for the last couple of years. Guess I'll have to troubleshoot that. I previously switched from using RealAudio because the RealPlayer was taking over my computer even worse than QuickTime does and I didn't want to have to even have it on my own system anymore. At the time, I decided to go with WMA over MP3 because, for the size files I wanted to use, it sounded better. It isn't automatically getting system extensions I have setup in IE, such as popup blocking, McAfee's SiteAdvisor, and who knows what else. The way it displays "Bookmarks" is a bit funky, just adding them to a horizontal menu. Kind of runs off the side with my list. Looks like you can also get to them off the Bookmarks menu. Might take some organizing and getting used to. It seems to display text kind of funkily on some sites, differently (and worse) than IE in many cases, and differently (and worse) than Firefox in a subset of those cases. Not sure why. One example is my blog (http://blog.myspace.com/rickpaulmusic), where both Safari and Firefox use a too small font, but IE does it right. I wonder if it is IE following some system-wide preference I've set in the Windows Control Panel, where Safari and Firefox ignore that? While I can toggle browser text size to adjust that, then it affects other stuff as well, where that stuff was the size I wanted it. In some other cases (e.g. http://news.yahoo.com), though, both IE and Firefox are getting things right, while Safari funks things up -- I think probably displaying bold text where there should not be bold text, or perhaps using a different font that looks (or is) bold. In one bright spot, though, for some reason, IE won't let me display CNN (www.cnn.com). It gets a "Cannot display the web page" error, though it will do it just fine if I use an IP address instead of the spelled out domain name. Safari does it just fine, and, at least at the moment, so does Firefox (though I was pretty sure it didn't last time I'd tried). Only thing I can think of is if the McAfee add-ins in IE, or some other IE add-in, is interfering, but why it would do that with some sites and not others is beyond me at this point. At any rate, with the CNN exception (and I think there are some other sites with a similar issue, though I haven't figured out any patterns as yet, other than that it always happens with CNN in IE), I still strongly prefer IE due to a combination of its seemingly honoring more of my Windows-level choices (it really would be nice if more applications would do this consistently to avoid having to configure the same sorts of things into a bunch of applications, and many applications do, at least to a degree, but there are some notable holdouts, especially with stuff that originated on the Mac), the better display of most web pages, and, of course, familiarity and having a history of having configured it to my tastes such as with Favorites, etc. Rick -- ======================================= Rick Paul Closet Cowboy Music (ASCAP) Web: www.RickPaul.info MySpace: www.myspace.com/rickpaulmusic ======================================= "Phoenix" <gtr_phoenix(a)mybrainhurts.verizon.net> wrote in message news:_E8Oj.334$Zk5.93(a)trnddc05... > I've been having trouble with Firefox lately--or maybe it's my laptop. > Has anyone else been having difficulties with the latest Firefox?
