Fresh Foods

Our local Farmer's Market is closed in February, but there are still resources for great local produce. Both Big John's Market and Anstead's are locally owned and carry regionally grown and organic produce. This month, look for cool weather crops such as leafy green vegetables, winter squash, broccoli, cauliflower and root crops like beets and turnips. Local fresh fruit is scarce in the winter. The markets carry local apples and pears, fresh kiwis and local citrus fruit.

Big John's is a full service supermarket with a butcher and Anstead's has a large variety of natural and organic local and regional products. Oakville market carries fresh local and international cheeses and a variety of cured meats as well as international specialty products. Santi takes orders for house cured meats and offers local delivery.


The Year of the Rat

On the Chinese calendar, 2008 is Lunar Year 4705-4706. On the Western calendar, the start of the New Year falls on February 7, 2007. Famous people born in the Year of the Rat include George Washington, Louis Armstrong, Mozart and Shakespeare. Anyone born in 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984 or 1996 was born under the sign of the rat. Like the rat, they are noted for being hardworking, charismatic people who possess great leadership skills. Intelligent and cunning at the same time, rats are highly ambitious and strong-willed people who are keen and unapologetic promoters of their own agendas, which often include money and power.

This Month in the Vineyard

The grapevines are dormant and the pruning continues. Much of last year's growth is removed in order to influence the coming season's growth and eventual yield. Pruning affects both quality and quantity of fruit. A carpet of legumes, mustard and oats grow under the grapevines and the winter grasses throughout the area have grown lush and verdant in spite of the limited recent rainfall.

February brings slowly lengthening days, rain and continued cool weather. Both day and night temperatures are cool with average lows of 41 degrees and average daytime highs of 63 degrees. February is historically wet with an average of 7 inches of rain over the course of the month.

February is a great month to see the beautiful winter vineyards and enjoy Healdsburg's many wineries.


Valentine's Day Specials

This month, several of our local restaurants will be offering Valentine's Day specials. Barndiva will have a special prix fixe meal with a couple of complimentary aphrodisiac shooters. The Dry Creek Kitchen will have a special menu with a choice of three courses or six. Santi will offer a four course prix fixe menu with choices to satisfy any couple. Manzanita has also designed a special four course menu with options. The Bear Republic Brewing Company will have a special Valentine's Day menu. Cena Luna will have their regular menu with some fabulous Valentine's Day Specials. Fabulous food abounds this Valentine's Day so be sure to make reservations early!

If you are looking for a special treat for your sweetheart, Big John's carries many special chocolates and candies. Artists and Farmers also has many special gifts for the love of your life including eclectic art, antiques, treasures and artisan pantry items.


Healdsburg Happenings

Events
This February, Healdsburg welcomes the inaugural Wild Steelhead Festival the weekend of February 8 - 10. The festival kicks off Friday night with a reception at the Lobby Bar in the Hotel Healdsburg followed by a gala dinner at the Dry Creek Kitchen. The main festival takes place on the Plaza Saturday at 10 am and runs through 4 pm. There will be educational activities, a trout pond, angling demonstration and fun for the whole family. The Raven will be showing the Fly Fishing Film Tour. Dry Creek Kitchen and Bistro Ralph will have special fish dinners. Sunday, there will be fishing guides available to take you to their favorite local fishing spots.

Wine & Food
Healdsburg is home to many special meals and tastings this month.

Every year, the American Legion Post 111 has great crab feast. This year, it will be held on February 2 at the Villa. The American Legion is a community service organization made up of American veterans. Their work includes the Blue Star Flag program which supplies special flags to the families of current American Soldiers. Many of those families hang those flags in their windows. The Crab Feed is a fun and tasty affair that supports their awesome programs.

Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays this month, Michel-Schlumberger is holding a special guided tasting of their current releases paired with artisan cheeses. Reservations are required to participate in these special tastings.

A few of the area wineries will be celebrating Valentine's Day by offering chocolates as a special taste treat. Michel-Schlumberger is holding a special Valentine's tasting on February 16. Enjoy a special vertical cabernet tasting of their premium estate Cabernet. To gild the lily, so to speak, they are pairing it with chocolate dipped goodies.

The Bear Republic Brewing Company will be showing the Super Bowl on the big screen on Sunday February 3. Good company, award winning beer, Super Bowl Specials and authentic pub grub will be available to enjoy during the game.

Hawkes Family Winery will be pouring their limited release wines at the Jimtown Store on February 7. Jimtown's First Thursday wine bar features a small local winery pouring wine to accompany a menu specially prepared to match.

February 10 is the Fifth Annual Miniatures at the Manor. There will be hors d'oeuvres and champagne, dinner, wine and a silent auction of juried small original art to benefit Plaza Arts Center. The fundraiser will be held at Madrona Manor. Plaza Arts Center is a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to supporting local school art programs and to enriching the artistic life of our community.

The Santi Supper Club will be serving a Lombardian style polenta feast. The Santi Supper Club is one Sunday a month (this month it is February 24) when the chefs create a delectable multi-course family style meal. Diners are seated community style to encourage relaxed discourse over a sumptuous meal.

Saturday, February 23, Michel-Schlumberger presents a five course dinner paired with Cabernets specially chosen by Jacques Schlumberger and winemaker Mike Brunson. The evening starts with a winemaker reception and hor d'eouvres followed by a sumptuous meal catered by Chloe's.


Music
Live jazz in Healdsburg almost every night! Thursday nights, stop by Palette Art Café and enjoy some live jazz, cutting edge art and a café meal or snack. Friday and Saturday nights, the Lobby Bar in the Hotel Healdsburg has jazz duos and trios. Monday and Tuesday nights, the Dry Creek Kitchen has live jazz to accompany dinner. They will be serving up a special three course meal for $34 to compliment the occasion.

Local musician Steve Pile will be performing at Palette Art Cafe on February 2 in a fundraising concert to bring solar panels to West Africa.

An evening of bluegrass music is coming to the Raven Theater on February 9. The Grammy winning Del McCoury Band will be performing in this intimate setting for one night only.

We are very lucky to have the Russian River Chamber Music bring us the Borromeo String Quartet on February 23 at the Healdsburg Community Church. Since their explosive debut in 1998, the Borromeo Quartet has become one of the most sought after string quartets in the world by virtue of their visionary and ravishingly realized performances. They will be presenting music composed by Beethoven, Jalbert, and Schumann. Pre-concert discussion begins at 7 pm and concert starts at 7:30 pm. Thanks to local grants, this concert is free although donations are strongly encouraged.

February 24, the Healdsburg Community Band will have their Pops Concert at the Healdsburg Community Church at 7:30 pm. For more information, please call 433-3413.

Theater
The Raven Players will bring The Cocktail Hour to stage Thursday, February 14 through February 16, February 22-23 and February 28-March 1. The Cocktail Hour is a witty, perceptive play by the author of Love Letters. It blends mordant humor with moments of affecting poignancy. It is a deliciously funny evening as the family sits around, rakes over old coals, and settles old scores.

Art
Arc Design Gallery will have a reception on February 1 to open their new show. The new show features artist Julian Cohen and will run through March 9. Reception on Friday, February 1 from 5:30 - 8:30.

Through February, the Imagination Bus Project and Plaza Arts' children's classes will be featured in a special children's art show. Their art encompasses paintings, unusual portraits and abstract expressionist work as well as clay creations. The reception is Sunday, February 3 from 1 pm – 3pm.

Literary
The first Tuesday of every month, the Center Literary Cafe holds an Open Mic night. The Center Literary Cafe is in the Healdsburg Senior Center at 7 pm. This month's reading is on February 5. Poet Xerxes Whitney will be reading his poems often characterized as personal and real to many people. Whitney's new book "Busting Through, Exploring My Truth" covers many dimensions of his unique life. Being born with cerebral palsy has provided him challenges to explore.

Xerxes will also be reading Saturday night, February 2, at the Palette Art Cafe at 8 pm.

On the third Sunday of each month, the Healdsburg Literary Guild holds a Poetry Reading with a featured reader and open mike time. The Poetry Reading is from 2:00 - 4:00 pm in the City Hall Council Chambers at 401 Grove Street. Call 431-1739 for more information.

For the little guys, Tuesdays at 11 am, there is Preschool Story time and Wednesday, February 27 at 7 pm, there is Pajama Story time for the whole family.

Garden
On February 2, the Master Gardener's will have a special lecture entitled "Less Toxic Pest Management - Dormant Strategies." All gardeners are welcome to this friendly, informative talk at 10:30 am at the Healdsburg Library.

A little earlier that day, at 10 am, the Healdsburg Nursery will be holding a free fruit tree pruning demonstration.

Our local Farmer's Market is closed in February, but there are
still resources for great local produce. Both Big John's Market
and Anstead's are locally owned and carry regionally grown and organic produce. This month, look for cool weather crops such
as leafy green vegetables, winter
squash, broccoli, cauliflower
and root crops like beets and turnips. Local fresh fruit is scarce
in the winter. The markets carry local apples and pears, fresh
kiwis and local citrus fruit. <br>
<br>
Big John's is
a full service supermarket with a butcher and Anstead's has a large variety of
natural and organic local and regional products. Oakville market carries fresh
local and international cheeses and a variety of cured meats as well as international
specialty products. Santi takes orders for house cured meats and offers local delivery. </td>

<p>On the Chinese calendar, 2008 is Lunar Year 4705-4706.&nbsp; On the Western calendar, the start of the New Year falls on February 7, 2007. Famous people born in the Year of the Rat include George Washington, Louis Armstrong, Mozart and Shakespeare.
Anyone born in 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984 or 1996 was born under the sign of the rat.&nbsp; Like the rat, they are noted for being hardworking, charismatic people who possess great leadership skills. Intelligent and cunning at the same time, rats are highly ambitious and strong-willed people who are keen and unapologetic promoters of their own agendas, which often include money and power. <br>

<td ><div class="redtext">This Month in the Vineyard </div>
<br>
The grapevines are dormant and the pruning continues. Much of last
year's growth is removed in order to influence the coming season's
growth and eventual yield.
Pruning affects both quality and quantity
of fruit. A carpet of legumes, mustard and oats
grow under the grapevines and the winter grasses throughout the
area have grown lush and verdant in spite of the limited recent rainfall.<br>
<br>
February brings slowly lengthening days, rain and continued cool
weather. Both day and night temperatures are cool with average
lows
of 41 degrees and average daytime highs of 63 degrees. February
is historically wet with an
average of 7 inches of rain over the course of the month. <br>
<br>

This month, several of our local restaurants will be offering Valentine's Day specials. Barndiva will have a special prix fixe meal with a couple of complimentary aphrodisiac shooters. The Dry Creek Kitchen will have a special menu with a choice of three courses or six. Santi will offer a four course prix fixe menu with choices to satisfy any couple. Manzanita has also designed a special four course menu with options. The Bear Republic Brewing Company will have a special Valentine's Day menu. Cena Luna will have their regular menu with some fabulous Valentine's Day Specials. Fabulous food abounds this Valentine's Day so be sure to make reservations early! <br>

If you are looking for a special treat for your sweetheart, Big John's carries many special chocolates and candies. Artists and Farmers also has many special gifts for the love of your life including eclectic art, antiques, treasures and artisan pantry items. </td>

<strong>Events</strong><br>
This February, Healdsburg welcomes the inaugural <span class="redtextNoSize">Wild Steelhead Festival</span> the weekend of February 8 - 10. The festival kicks off Friday night with a reception at the Lobby Bar in the Hotel Healdsburg followed by a gala dinner at the Dry Creek Kitchen. The main festival takes place on the Plaza Saturday at 10 am and runs through 4 pm. There will be educational activities, a trout pond, angling demonstration and fun for the whole family. The Raven will be showing the Fly Fishing Film Tour. Dry Creek Kitchen and Bistro Ralph will have special fish dinners. Sunday, there will be fishing guides available to take you to their favorite local fishing spots.<br>

<strong>Wine &amp; Food</strong></strong><br>
Healdsburg is home to many special meals and tastings this month. <br>
<br>
Every year, the American Legion Post 111 has great <span class="redtextNoSize">crab</span> feast. This year, it will be held on February 2 at the Villa. The American Legion is a community service organization made up of American veterans. Their work includes the Blue Star Flag program which supplies special flags to the families of current American Soldiers. Many of those families hang those flags in their windows. The Crab Feed is a fun and tasty affair that supports their awesome programs. </p>
<p>&nbsp; </p>
<p> Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays this month, Michel-Schlumberger is holding a special guided tasting of their current releases paired with artisan <span class="redtextNoSize">cheeses</span>. Reservations are required to participate in these special tastings. <br>

A few of the area wineries will be celebrating Valentine's Day by offering chocolates as a special taste treat. Michel-Schlumberger is holding a special Valentine's tasting on February 16.


Enjoy a special <span class="redtextNoSize">vertical cabernet</span> tasting of their premium estate Cabernet. To gild the lily, so to speak, they are pairing it with chocolate dipped goodies. <br>

The Bear Republic Brewing Company will be showing the<span class="redtextNoSize"> Super Bowl</span> on the big screen on Sunday February 3. Good company, award winning beer, Super Bowl Specials and authentic pub grub will be available to enjoy during the game. <br>

Hawkes Family Winery will be pouring their <span class="redtextNoSize">limited release wines</span> at the Jimtown Store on February 7. Jimtown&rsquo;s First Thursday wine bar features a small local winery pouring wine to accompany a menu specially prepared to match. <br>
<br>
February 10 is the Fifth Annual Miniatures at the Manor. There will be hors d&rsquo;oeuvres and champagne, dinner, wine and a silent auction of juried small original art to benefit Plaza Arts Center. The <span class="redtextNoSize">fundraiser</span> will be held at Madrona Manor. Plaza Arts Center is a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to supporting local school art programs and to enriching the artistic life of our community.<br>
<br>
The Santi Supper Club will be serving a <span class="redtextNoSize">Lombardian</span> style polenta feast. The Santi Supper Club is one Sunday a month (this month it is February 24) when the chefs create a delectable multi-course family style meal. Diners are seated community style to encourage relaxed discourse over a sumptuous meal. <br>
<br>
Saturday, February 23, Michel-Schlumberger presents a five course dinner paired with Cabernets specially chosen by Jacques Schlumberger and winemaker Mike Brunson. The evening starts with a <span class="redtextNoSize">winemaker reception</span> and hor d&rsquo;eouvres followed by a sumptuous meal catered by Chloe&rsquo;s. </p>

Music</strong><br>
Live jazz in Healdsburg almost every night! Thursday nights, stop by Palette Art Caf&eacute; and enjoy some live <span class="redtextNoSize">jazz</span>, cutting edge art and a caf&eacute; meal or snack. Friday and Saturday nights, the Lobby Bar in the Hotel Healdsburg has jazz duos and trios. Monday and Tuesday nights, the Dry Creek Kitchen has live jazz to accompany dinner. They will be serving up a special three course meal for $34 to compliment the occasion. <br>
<br>
Local musician Steve Pile will be performing at Palette Art Cafe on February 2 in a fundraising concert to bring <span class="redtextNoSize">solar panels</span> to West Africa. <br>
<br>
An evening of <span class="redtextNoSize">bluegrass</span> music is coming to the Raven Theater on February 9. The Grammy winning Del McCoury Band will be performing in this intimate setting for one night only. <br>
<br>
We are very lucky to have the Russian River Chamber Music bring us the Borromeo String Quartet on February 23 at the Healdsburg Community Church. Since their explosive debut in 1998, the Borromeo Quartet has become one of the most sought after <span class="redtextNoSize">string quartets</span> in the world by virtue of their visionary and ravishingly realized performances. They will be presenting music composed by Beethoven, Jalbert, and Schumann. Pre-concert discussion begins at 7 pm and concert starts at 7:30 pm. Thanks to local grants, this concert is free although donations are strongly encouraged. <br>

February 24, the Healdsburg Community Band will have their <span class="redtextNoSize">Pops</span> Concert at the Healdsburg Community Church at 7:30 pm. For more information,

<br>
<strong>Theater</strong><br>
The Raven Players will bring <span class="redtextNoSize">The Cocktail Hour</span> to stage Thursday, February 14 through February 16, February 22-23 and February 28-March 1. The Cocktail Hour is a witty, perceptive play by the author of Love Letters. It blends mordant humor with moments of affecting poignancy. It is a deliciously funny evening as the family sits around, rakes over old coals, and settles old scores.<br>
<br>
<strong>Art</strong><br>
Arc Design Gallery will have a reception on February 1 to open their new show. The new show features artist Julian Cohen and will run through March 9. <span class="redtextNoSize">Reception</span> on Friday, February 1 from 5:30 - 8:30.<br>
<br>
Through February, the Imagination Bus Project and Plaza Arts&rsquo; children&rsquo;s classes will be featured in a special <span class="redtextNoSize">children&rsquo;s art show</span>. Their art encompasses paintings, unusual portraits and abstract expressionist work as well as clay creations. The reception is Sunday, February 3 from 1 pm &ndash; 3pm. <br>

<strong>Literary</strong><br>
The first Tuesday of every month,
the Center Literary Cafe holds an
Open Mic night. The Center Literary
Cafe is in the Healdsburg
Senior Center at 7 pm. This month's reading is on February 5. Poet <span class="redtextNoSize">Xerxes</span> Whitney will be reading his poems often characterized as personal and real to many people. Whitney's new book "Busting Through, Exploring My Truth" covers many dimensions of his unique life. Being born with cerebral palsy has provided him challenges to explore. <br>
<br>
Xerxes will also be reading Saturday night, February 2, at the Palette Art Cafe at 8 pm. <br>
<br>
On the third Sunday of each month, the
Healdsburg Literary Guild holds a <span class="redtextNoSize">Poetry Reading</span> with a featured
reader and open mike time. The Poetry Reading is from
2:00 - 4:00 pm in the
City Hall Council Chambers at
401 Grove Street. Call 431-1739 for more information.<br>

For the little guys, Tuesdays at 11 am, there is Preschool Story time and Wednesday, February 27 at 7 pm, there is Pajama Story time for the whole family. <br>

<strong> Garden</strong> <br>
On February 2, the Master Gardener's will have a special lecture entitled &quot;<span class="redtextNoSize">Less Toxic</span> Pest Management - Dormant Strategies.&quot; All gardeners are welcome to this friendly, informative talk at 10:30 am at the Healdsburg Library. <br>

A little earlier that day, at 10 am, the Healdsburg Nursery will be holding a free fruit tree pruning demonstration. <br>
