From: Malcolm P on 1 May 2008 12:04 Hi, A little background. I have 1 PC (XP PRo SP2) connected via ethernet to a Netgear DG834GT adls/ router. I also have 2 laptops (1 XP Pro SP2 and 1 Vista HP) connected wirelessly. I also have a canon printer attached via USB to the PC. This set up works fine, internet, file and print sharing...everything. Because of inconsistent signal strength I introduced a BT Home Hub (HH) as a wireless access point (not connected to the telephone). I now connect the two laptops to the HH and the HH links wirelessly to the Netgear. I have got internet access for both laptops but can find no way of getting file and print sharing to working between the laptops and the PC. The netgear settings are: IP 192.168.0.1 Subnet 255.255.255.0 DHCP server on IP range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.253 Channel 11 Uses WEP encryption WDS mode enabled for wireless repeater mode bridging The HH settings are IP 192.168.254 Subnet 255.255.255.0 DHCP server is off IP range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.253 Channel 11 WDS mode enabled Firewall off On the Netgear I can see the HH and laptops are "attached devices" The two laptops can see each other, but can't see the PC The PC can't see either of the laptops No settings on the laptops have been changed All computers are part of the same MSHOME workgroup The printer is set to be shared There are folders on all computers that are shared Whatever I try just doesn't fix the problem. I keep thinking it's either the HH is not passing the network requests through (but as the firewall is off everything should be going through fine), or there is something within the Netgear that is causing the problem, but as the laptops worked fine when connected to it, I can't think what it would be. I'm totally confused. This is driving me absolutely nuts, so before I go insane could anyone of you very kind people offer any suggestions or advice please. Many thanks Malc

I presume that its IP address is actually 192.168.0.254? My guess is that you have a segmented workgroup; with the 2 laptops using WiFi connectivity, this will happen. <http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html> http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html You can diagnose the problem, using logs from "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", from each computer. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!): <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://networking.nitecruzr.net/
From: Malcolm P on 2 May 2008 10:50 Hi Chuck, Thanks for the advice. It's taken me a while to get through it all and to be honest I'm getting a little confused. I'm no newbie but networking is a bit of a black art and I'm worried that I might just make matter worse. Following your comment about my IP address I have followed an article (link from your site) and made the following changes: HH IP - 192.168.0.2 DCHP Server off Netgear IP - 192.168.0.1 Subnet 255.255.255.0 DHCP Server on Range 192.168.0.50 - 192.168.0.254 I've restricted my attempts to the PC that is connected via ethernet and a single Laptop connected wirelessly. Both machine are running XP Pro SP2. So far I've checked: * Restrictananymous - Ok on PC and Laptop * HiddenServer - Ok on PC and Laptop * RestrictNullSessionAccess - Ok on both * Disabled the Computer Browser and TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper services on the Laptop * Specifically enabled NetBIOS (network properties) on both. * Run CDiag on the PC but it only found itself, nothing for the laptop * I also noticed I had an nVidia network controller and there mention of a hidden firewall. However after reviewing the removal steps I don't have the Network Access Manager so don't believe I'm affected by this Unfortuantely none of this has helped. I've therefore taken browstat, ipconfig, net config server and net config workstation logs and I'd be really grateful if you could have a look through PC Name - ROCKET (allocated 192.168.0.51 & 192.168.0.52 Have got 2 etherenet connections) Laptop Name - LAPTOP (allocated 192.168.0.50) PLEASE NOTE - The second laptop (Vista) on the network is called HERCULES. This name is mentioned in the logs from the 1st laptop On the PC: BROWSTAT STATUS Status for domain MSHOME on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{B9E8569E-CEA6-43E7-AD14-CDBBF2E9345E} Browsing is active on domain. Server is active on NwlnkIpx (0013d4c226f6) NetBT_Tcpip_{B9E8569E-CEA6-43E7-AD14-CDBBF2E9345E} (0013d4c226f6) NetBT_Tcpip_{25F84006-C574-46E5-AA16-FD2F9DBFB428} (0013d4c2351f) NetbiosSmb (000000000000) NwlnkNb (000000000002) Simplify that! Rocket is your browse master, and Rocket has 1) 2 Ethernet adapters 2) IPX/SPX. 3) NetBEUI Get rid of one Ethernet connection. Rocket right now is using "192.168.0.51" and "192.168.0.52". That's one too many. Dual homed servers are a problem for Windows Networking. I would dispense with the nVidia nForce connection. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/02/hidden-personal-firewall-nvidia-nforce.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/02/hidden-personal-firewall-nvidia-nforce.html And get rid of IPX/SPX and NetBEUI, on both Laptop and Rocket! <http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html> http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://networking.nitecruzr.net/
From: Malcolm P on 3 May 2008 02:26 Hi Chuck, First of all, thanks for your continued help with this....it's very much appreciated. Ok, I've now got Rocket (PC-ethernet) and Laptop (Wireless) set with just the following network properties: * Client for Microsoft Networks * File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks * Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) (Confirm both are set explicitly to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP) I've disconnected and disabled the nVidia nForce controller. Internet access is fine but unfortuantely they still unable to communicate with each other. I've added a new set of logs for both machines, but I have nocticed something odd...Rocket can "see" Laptop in My Network Places, but can't access any of the shared folders and brings up the message "\\Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource - Network path not found". However on LAPTOP I can see the MSHOME workgroup but can't see any computer within it. It gives the message "Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource - The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available" Here are the new logs for both machines: PC (Rocket) BROWSTAT STATUS Status for domain MSHOME on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{25F84006-C574-46E5-AA16-FD2F9DBFB428} Browsing is active on domain.
