From: Don P. Don on 11 Apr 2008 19:26 I have Windows XP connected by a simple cross-over CAT5 cable to a computer with Windows ME. I am extremely frustrated, in that the detailed Microsoft instructions constantly divert me to connecting the other (ME) computer to the Internet. To heck with the Internet, I want to share my files and printer with the ME computer, and eventually to make the ME computer the host and reverse the sharing. I can ping the ME computer from the XP and get a good response. Invoking My Network Places doesn't show the ME computer from the XP computer and vice-versa. Where the heck are the instructions / Wizard that lets me GO FORWARD to share files and printer? HELP!
From: Don P. on 11 Apr 2008 19:41 P.S.--- If I ping the XP computer's TCP/IP from either the XP or ME computer, it times out. If I ping the ME computer from either the XP or ME computer, I get good response. Is there something wrong with my hardware?

They need to be in the same subnet. For example, 192.168.1.1 on one and 192.168.1.2 on the other, with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 on both. Also make sure that all firewalls on each computer are off, at least while you're setting things up. Some antivirus apps, notoriously Norton, include an "Internet Worm Protection" feature that is, in fact, a firewall. -- Lem -- MS-MVP To the moon and back with 2K words of RAM and 36K words of ROM. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Guidance_Computer http://history.nasa.gov/afj/compessay.htm
