I'm attempting to create a Flash/Director Integrated Application to open PDF's
according to Steve
Grosvenor's tutorial on sitepoint.com. I'm having trouble installing the
Buddy API Xtra. I've copied it into Director's Xtra folder, also restarted
Director, but every time I publish i get an error saying it can't find the
buddyapi.x32 file. whats going on?? please help!

is there any other way to open PDF's from director without the Xtra?

filextra4 has also an open file feature, and is totally free.
But that doesn't explain why buddyAPI is missing when you publish your work.
What do you mean by "publishing" ? making a projector or making a
shockwave movie ?
if 1st solution make sure you embed the xtra or put it in a "xtras"
folder next to your projector.
If 2nd solution, forget it : both BuddyAPI & Filextra4 aren't shockwave
safe xtras.

When I said publish I mean making a projector. i still cant get this to work and its really annoying. everything else works fine...why wont director find my Xtra?????

thanks for the suggestion.

you must create a folder named xtras in the same folder where your
project (.exe) file is located
and in there copy the .x32 file

the copy you put in director xtras folder is for it to work in authoring
only..

Or do like Gary suggested on the Buddy API forum where you asked the
same question.
Modify -> Movie -> Xtras and add it to the list of xtras to be included
in your projector. Only asset/transition xtras are added to this list
automatically upon usage. Scripting xtras have to be added manually.
