From: Richard Freedman on 15 Jan 2006 10:19 I saw that Microsoft has discontinued Windows Media (WM) support so I installed the Flip4Mac from their web site. Now WM content no longer plays in Safari. To reproduce this go to http://www.610wip.com/ and click on Listen Live. My set up is QT 6.0.4, Flip4Mac 2.0.1, Safari 1.3.2, OS10.3.9. I found the old WM plug-in in /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/Disabled\ Plug-Ins/ and exchanged it for the Flip4Mac Plug-Ins. That restored my ability to play WM content in Safari. I also tried opening QT control panel and checking all the audio boxes but that didn't help. What's the deal with Flip4Mac and WM? Are we screwed again?

Are we screwed again? According to the article in the Business section of the San Jose Mercury-News on 2006.01.14, Microsoft has discontinued development of the Mac Windows Media Player client, licensing and supporting the folks at Telestream in their effort to provide a Mac solution. -- Spenser

Your results are meaningless because you are using an obsolete version of QT, an obsolete version of Safari, and an obsolete version of the Mac OS. Flip4Mac works fine for me -- mostly. On this page <http://windowsmedia.com/MediaGuide/Home> everything worked except the History Channel Abraham Lincoln Preview. That's troublesome of course, unless it's just the History Channel. (I have no doubt that they will attempt to tie Lincoln to Nostradamus, the Aliens who Built the Pyramids, and Area 51.) I'm using OS 10.4.4/QT Pro 7.0.4/Safari 2.0.3. Are we screwed again? Microsoft had (as of two days ago), an older version of Flip4Mac on their website (ver. 2.0). This caused all sorts of problems with playback under Safari or Firefox, with QT 7.0.4 (and OS X 10.4.4). I just installed Flip4Mac ver 2.0.1 (from the Flip4Mac website - <http://www.flip4mac.com>), and it works perfectly with the same setup. I loaded Flip4Mac 2.0.1 on an iMac G5 Rev 3 w/ a very stock OS 10.4.3 and it doesn't work. Tried the Comedy Central links mentioned earlier as being problems and sure enough they are. Tried other links and none worked. What I'd REALLY prefer is to use VLC to play a stream but haven't found any way to set that up in Safari. Anyone have any ideas on this? --Fred |
