WinXP or Vista. I'd probably upgrade the HDD and the warranty to 2 years
onsite......

Are the Vostros as ugly in real life as they are in the picture?

When configured with higher options, the recent Lenovo ThinkPad deals
on the T61 were better than the Vostro deal.

They are about 20% off, and (through today, 4/14) if you use coupon
code USPGRANDSLAM you get another 10% off:

Needless to say, the build quality of the ThinkPads is better.

The higher-spec'd Vostro starting with the above deal (not the
bottom-spec'd one) adding options to make it roughly equivalent to the
ThinkPad below is actually more expensive than the ThinkPad. The
Vostro is about $1,370 when upgraded compared with $1,036 for the
ThinkPad.

Following is a T61 ThinkPad 14" with integrated graphics (better
battery life and good enough), but the 15.4" ones with discrete NVIDIA
128MB graphics were only about $100 more, so the ThinkPad in that
config is still about $200 less.

$610 savings on the ThinkPad. ThinkPad has a better build quality and
other advantages:
- Both have available 160GB 7200rpm drive (seems to be sweet spot)
- TrackPoint and TouchPad
- Integrated WAN
- Fingerprint reader
- ThinkPad power management
- PC Card and Express Card slot
- Modular battery (not sure if Vostro has this, I doubt it)
- 2GB 1 DIMM option

Vostro has some advantages:
- Availability of TrueLife screen
- Available integrated web cam
- The 3 year service is on-site vs. Lenovo's depot

Below specs total $1,036 after savings -- great deal if one wants a
better deal on a ThinkPad compared to a Vostro for higher-spec'd
systems.

Ah....check carefully.

Where they are able to save the $$ is on the HD. This is offered with the
80 GB 5400 RPM thing. To go 160/7200 or 250/5400 you have to add $175.

I didn't look any further than that though.

The option to jump to a 120gb is nominal, as is the jump to 1 year or 2
years onsite.

The offer is a good value in comparison to what they've most recently
offered.
