Hi...

I was going to try and get some time at the local retail store to ask
some programming questions, but it was hard to find any reference to the
Genius Bars on the site anymore. I did a search and found the dashboard
widget and installed that, but all the widget's attempts to fetch data
fail.

Has apple discontinued that feature? Have I just waited too long?

http://www.apple.com/retail/

"Meet Mac Specialists who demonstrate products and answer your
questions. Visit the Genius Bar and receive onsite technical service
and support from Mac Geniuses."

I'm not familiar with the Widget nor what it does, but if you're
looking to make an appointment at a bar, you can do it at the above
link. Click on your specific store, and click on the "Apple Store
Concierge" link.

Unless you're a "ProCare" member, you can only make same-day
reservations at the bar, keep in mind.

Thanks, I didn't catch that. Didn't equate Concierge with the Genius
Bar. I clicked on that link but the site didn't seem to be working;
when I tried to sign in as Guest, it just kept scratching the form and
starting me over. Wouldn't let me past. I don't have a ProCare
account, so I don't know if that would work to sign in.

The widget came from Apple and purported that it would let you check the
reservation schedules for the Genius Bar and the configured store. When
you pick a store, it tries to fetch the data from a
https://genius.apple.com url that never returns. I tried taking the s
off and going to http://genius.apple.com, and it redirects you to
http://www.apple.com/retail.

I'm undecided on whether to spend $99 to get ProCare; if you want to
make a lot of bar reservations, it could come in quite handy.

Thanks
_Mark

Ha! You should have seen me in my local Apple store, trying to figure
out how to get on the list. I looked through all the stuff on the
dock, on the menus -- for the life of me, I couldn't find it. One of
the sales guys closed all the windows, and showed me their "special
buttons" they have on the *desktop* on the in-store machines to do
that. Whoops.

Weird! I wonder if it's something with your particular store's page?
It seems to be working fine for my local store in Albany, NY. (Of
course, it's not letting me make a reservation right now as the store's
about the close, but the engine seems to be working.)

Might be worth trying it again tomorrow mid-morning; maybe there's some
quirk they're working on?

I'm not a pro-care member either; just a regular "guest" on it.

Hmm... Apple is still offering the Widget for download. Out of
curiosity, have you tried it on a different store? I'm wondering if
maybe your store's whole genius-reservation system is broken? I don't
think Procare would help in this case.

I just installed the Widget, and it's not working for me either. I
have a feeling something's gone wrong on Apple's end... guess we'll see
if it works any better tomorrow.

I doubt you'll find much benefit by visiting Apple's Genius Bar to pose
programming questions; those guys are very helpful for hardware issues
and using the Applications that Apple sells. For programming questions,
your best bet is to sign up Apple's the online developer's web site and
post your questions there.
