From: John Taylor on 8 Nov 2007 03:35 I have a dual headed machine currently running Win2k. I want to move it to Ubuntu, still dual headed. It currently has an ATI radeon 7000. As far as I can tell this is too old for ATI linux drivers to give dual screen support. Does anyone else have a dual screen setup working ? Is it best to use two adaptors, or can I get a single card that will run two screens ? Thanks JohnT

AFAICT (with nVidia at least) to be able to get dual head working with one card (two ports) you must use the proprietary nvidia driver. I have this set-up working well at the moment with a GeForce 6600 You can always use Xinerama which is built-in to X.org, but I think it only works with two cards.

When you say ATI driver do you mean the proprietary one? It doesn't support Xinerama anyway, only a single framebuffer across both heads or a separate X screen on each monitor. The free driver does support Xinerama. It should work with a 9x00 card (IIRC I've used Xinerama with a 9600XT as well as a 9000) in case it doesn't work with the 7000. -- TH * http://www.realh.co.uk

I've a projector server set up with an nvidia Quatro card which has twin DVI outputs. I use the closed source driver and I configured it by hand.

Do you mean that it shows the same on both screens, or a single 'screen' stretching over both ? If it stretches over both, how does this differ from Xinerama ? Looks like I'll need to upgrade my adaptor regardless, although the prospects of finding another AGP card don't look good :-( Regards JohnT |
