From: Richard Maxwell on 8 May 2008 18:57 I am not able to use the file save as or many other functions in Word 2003. The product is activated, I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled the program and nothing works. My IT guy says he hasn't seen anything like it. Any ideas? Excel is working fine, so is Outlook. I am using Office 2003, SP3.
From: Herb Tyson [MVP] on 8 May 2008 23:00 Does Word work okay if started in safe mode? Press Ctrl as Word is starting, then click Yes to starting in safe mode. Another thing to try... create a new Windows user profile and see if Word work okay there. -- Herb Tyson MS MVP Author of the Word 2007 Bible Blog: http://word2007bible.herbtyson.com Web: http://www.herbtyson.com "Richard Maxwell" <RichardMaxwell(a)discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:DD7DB68E-8B1C-4704-9797-BA85BA540B6E(a)microsoft.com... >I am not able to use the file save as or many other functions in Word 2003. > The product is activated, I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled > the > program and nothing works. From: TWSCPA on 27 May 2008 10:41 I have the identical situation as Richard; starting Word in safe mode does restore the greyed out functions but this is an awkward solution. Does anybody have an answer other than setting up a new profile (which creates other issues on our network)? We did rename the user's profile folder to user.old and let the PC recreate a new folder when she logged on; then copied pertinent info from the old profile folder to the new folder which worked at first but we're now back to where we were. Others can log on to her PC and everything is fine, so it is a profile issue. She can log on elsewhere on the network and everything is fine. From: Herb Tyson [MVP] on 28 May 2008 08:42 When starting in safe mode works, the problem usually is one of three things: 1. A misbehaving add-in is either causing the problem directly or is corrupting normal.dot (or normal.dotm, if Word 2007) or a registry entry. 2. Something else has corrupted the registry--usually the Data key, but sometimes the Option key, as well. 3. Something else has corrupted Normal.dot (or .dotm if 2007). My first step usually is to try renaming both Normal.dot (or .dotm if 2007) and the Data key in the registry. Others begin with trying to track down the add-in. See this article for a full discussion of how to troubleshoot these kinds of problems: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm -- Herb Tyson MS MVP Author of the Word 2007 Bible Blog: http://word2007bible.herbtyson.com Web: http://www.herbtyson.com "TWSCPA" <TWSCPA(a)discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:8FA9ACC2-B433-4D80-80FC-9F498CAA66F9(a)microsoft.com... >I have the identical situation as Richard; starting Word in safe mode does > restore the greyed out functions but this is an awkward solution. > > Does anybody have an answer other than setting up a new profile (which > creates other issues on our network)? > > We did rename the user's profile folder to user.old and let the PC > recreate > a new folder when she logged on; then copied pertinent info from the old > profile folder to the new folder which worked at first but we're now back > to > where we were.
