From: sarah on 21 May 2008 21:19 My question I am trying to update a project plan that has already been created. The milestones and task dates have already been identified. I am able to change the date for the tasks themselves, but not for the milestones. Why is this? I am just selecting the drop down on the date that is already populated and selecting the new date...but nothing happens Also, when I double click on the Milestone start or end date I get a dialogue box. The tab with in that box that allows you to input the date is grayed out. Is this a restriction that has been set up by the creator themselves?
From: Jim Aksel on 21 May 2008 22:22 I'm scared! First, the need to key a date into a schedule should be **extremely** rare. When you do that, you automatically create constraints in the project plan that will attempt to hold the dates you key in as firm dates. Why would you ever want to do that? Use proper scheduling logic by linking appropriate tasks with finish to start relationships (or some other kind). Then, let the software drive the dates of the successor tasks to where they should be. That's why you paid $500 for the software. To directly address your question, you have probably polluted the constraint types because of keyed dates. Insert two columns: "Constraint Type" and "Constraint Date". You want to see a lot of "As Soon As Possible" .... if not, you can change it. When you change it back to "ASAP" you will probably notice of lot of movement in your schedule to the left. This means there are logic problems with the predecessors/successors and that will need to be worked out with your team. -- If this post was helpful, please consider rating it.
