My HP LaserJet 5P suddenly stopped picking up sheets from the normal
tray.
On attempting to print, after a few seconds the orange paper jam light
comes on, though no paper has been even picked up, let alone jammed.

I can open the front hand feed tray and it will print from that
normally.

Any ideas?

It looks like the pickup rollers might not be able to grab the paper
is the tray. The manual tray has its own pickup rollers.

What I'm hoping for is a way to fix it.

Make sure nothing is obstructing the paper path.

Your printer's uptake roller for your paper transport part probably need
a good cleaning with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and a lint free towel
or paper towel, or a cotton swab or two.

Rubbing alcohol is not recommended of "long-term" cleanings. It does
not have enough isopropyl in it. For long term cleaning, you will
need to locate a proper isopropyl cleaner.
