Last year Nashvilles event was voted by some organization as the second best in the nation, according to the talking heads on stage tonight. The fireworks were awsome, almost overwhelming at the end. The sound left a lot to be desired. I didn't even check to see who was the contractor, although there were a lot of familiar faces on stage. The Nashville Symphony started out with a short number...sort of a soundcheck. The audio was way too upfront and strident, but I figured that was to be expected at such an event, especially as a first number. Their subsequent numbers, before the fireworks, showed considerable improvement. Phil Vassar was the opening act. He put on a very good show, and the sound was better than passable...very enjoyable in fact when his band was playing alone. His final number with symphonic backing was less so. Michael McDonald followed, after some additional programming. His set started out sounding very bad. The vocals were way upfront, distorted, pumping and dry. Bass guitar dominated the bottom end, a constant rumble instead of individual notes. The sax sounded like a train horn. By the second or third song, the foh guy had tamed the sound somewhat, the vox sounded a little smoother, the keys got a little more airtime. Then the Symphony came back in to accompany and everything went to hell again--rampant ringing and feedback. By the last number, it was again somewhat under control, but was never what I would call 'good'. I believe the difference might be explained by stage volume. Vassar used IEMs, while McDonald had several honkin' big wedges around him. It sounded like the stage sound got into everything, especially the symphony mics. The synchronized symphonic/fireworks display, as mentioned, was awesome. The ensemble played well. The fireworks were almost excruciating in volume; which was for the best, as they drowned out the sound system almost entirely. There was a hint of the symphony sound during the quieter parts of the display; but with the fireworks across the river, behind the stage, every report was picked up and amplified--badly, and with delay--by the instrument mics. All in all, we had a good time; and I trust that only a fraction of the 100,000+ attending noticed the deficiencies in the audio. jak
